Pocari/Tuna, what do you know about Serie A clubs signing two non-EU players per season? I'm not sure if you seen the discussion, but we were discussing it a few pages back (page 569 I think). The consensus – as well as a few articles from Roma related websites – seems to be that you can only have two non-EU players on your books at all times, but I thought you could sign two non-EU players per season. Football Italia goes that way too. Also, when you look at Catania, who have move Argentineans in their squad then all of Buenos Aires, it doesn't really back-up the initial view.

EDIT: Ok, i think I've found the solution to this riddle. This article from the explains the first change on non-EU players which the FIGC made in July 2010, in which Italian clubs could only sign one non-EU player on the basis that he replace another non-EU player already on the team who is moving abroad. The most recent change which the FIGC changed ( from Football Italia) a month or so ago changed Italian clubs being able to sign two non-EU players instead of one, but still on the basis that they are replacing another non-EU player already on the team, hence why Barusso comes into it.

Here's the text from that FT article:

Under the new rules, Serie A clubs with more than two non-EU players will only be allowed to sign a new non-EU player coming from abroad on condition that he replace another non-EU player already on the team who is moving abroad or whose contract had expired at the end of June.

The non-EU player being replaced will not be allowed to play for his previous club during the same season but if his contract has expired he will be able to transfer to another Serie A team.

No DDR (international duty), Brighi, Juan and Greco (injured). Stekelenburg, Burdisso, Okaka and Simplicio are all included. Thats means Antei and Burdisso are the only centre-halves in the side, along with Heinze if you want to include him.

So according to Corriere della Sera: Cassano personally called the new leaders of Roma to enquire about the possibility of a return to Roma.

File under believe it or not. IF true what do we all think of a return of Cassano.

Well, if Pizza's to stay you want him to feel wanted and confident and that he has the coach's trust; on the other hand, if he's to be sold it hardly raises his price if you say you're looking to push him out the door. LE's comments about Borriello and Pizarro were all enthusiastic and appreciative; time will tell how sincere they were.

I'm surprised the Cassano rumours haven't come up much earlier. He'd have to be an up-grade on Vooch, wouldn't he? If he weren't so lazy and didn't have such a terrible track-record he'd be a natural fit in an inside-left role.

The exception for the non-EU players are if they are joining from another Italian team.

Otherwise it's treated the same whether it's within the EU or not.

Ah yeh, hold on, I see now, sorry Redser, looks like you were right. This law only comes into effect if they are coming from abroad:

And so to answer my own query as to how the likes of Inter or Catania, with so many non-EU players already in their ranks, can sign a new non-EU player, is that they can only do so if they ship a non-EU player (like Muntari) out, and you can do that up to a maximum of twice each season. I is clever.
