How did Angel Valdes look?

In the first game I didn't think the team mechanism worked really so it was almost impossible for him to look much good. Rosi was more prominent charging down the right - the model might suit him at right back since it demands more energy than defensive ability (relatively speaking, at least). I didn't see anything that worried me about Angel, but also nothing that really stood out. His pass to Totti early on was stunning but also one I suspect he might not have tried in a real game.

Giancarlo De Sisti, bandiera di Roma e Fiorentina, ha parlato a Sky Sport della nuova Roma, concentrandosi in particolar modo su Luis Enrique: "C'è grande curiosità intorno a lui, l'ho visto muoversi durante le sedute d'allenamento come se fosse un autentico calciatore in attività, mostrando tutte le qualità che aveva da giocatore, i suoi sistemi sono diversi da quelli degli altri, che sono tatticamente più accorti rispetto al suo 4-3-3 che in fase di possesso è roboante, ma bisogna vedere quali saranno i movimenti senza palla, come si inseriranno i nuovi elementi nel gruppo, se Vucinic se ne andrà, che per me è un pezzo da novanta. Sugli esterni, altri dubbi. Per il gioco di Luis Enrique è fondamentale avere due laterali tecnici e dotati di gran corsa. Cassetti è più uomo di posizione, poco adatto alla spinta costante. Cicinho ha qualità, ma non è un fulmine di guerra sul piano del dinamismo. Rosi si fa preferire per prepotenza fisica, ma manca di 'dolce piede'. Volgarmente si direbbe: in tre non ne fanno uno. O meglio, nessuno dei tre rappresenta l'ideale esterno basso desiderato da Luis.



Secondo i logici desideri di Luis Enrique, i tre migliori interpreti del 'suo' calcio al momento sono Daniele De Rossi (al centro), David Pizarro e Leandro Greco (ai lati). Gli elementi più affidabili sul piano tecnico, gli unici in grado di elaborare un gioco basato sul possesso palla costante. E le riserve? Gente onesta, gregari di lusso, pesci fuor d'acqua.

The bit about the reserves is just the lead in to the predictable comments on Simone and Brighi and Taddei - Perrotta è uomo spogliatoio e non si tocca, ma i piedi di SuperSimo 'cozzano' con la filosofia spagnoleggiante. Stesso discorso per Brighi, mentre Taddei fin qui è stato continuamente proposto nel ruolo di esterno basso. Esperimento non riuscito del tutto. Ai giovanissimi Viviani e Verre (quest'ultimo impiegato anche nel trio offensivo) non bisogna dare eccessive responsabilità. Mistero Bertolacci: il 20enne rientrato dal prestito a Lecce avrebbe dovuto rappresentare una delle principali attrattive del precampionato romanista. Non si è mai visto. Che fine ha fatto? Non si sa, nel frattempo già si parla di un suo ritorno in Puglia.

That none of them (Perrotta, Brighi, Taddei) are really cut out for roles in a tightly packed, highly technical 4-3-3; that Taddei's been playing as fullback; that Bertolacci seems to have fallen off the map somewhere.

I'm sure they're going to try to bring in another central midfielder who may play at Greco's expense - I should think there's quite a good chance that he will be loaned out/sold yet, though I really do think he's the most natural 'mezz'ala' at the club for a possesso palla type of game (more technical than everyone other than Pizza; more mobile than Pizza); both of those things (fear that he will still be sold; appreciation of the mix of qualities he brings) were behind my comments on Greco above. I also think that with a more technical front three (let's say Vooch, Totti, Bojan; or Lamela, Totti, Bojan or even Taddei, Totti, Bojan where Taddei isn't so much technical as very tidy as a link-up player) the pressure on the midfield three's technical qualities won't be quite so high and so Simone and Mateo are likely to look more comfortable in there than that piece suggests. And then there's certainly also the possibility that Lamela will play in the midfield. Everything I've read has made me think he's being ear-marked for one of the wing-forward roles, but threadzo seems to think he's likely to play further back and Davit feels he might be an 'Iniesta-type' central midfielder in due course. I suspect Cassetti is also likely to start the season as first-choice right back. I like the terms that piece uses - "Cassetti è più uomo di posizione, poco adatto alla spinta costante"; however, I think it underestimates Cassetti's ability to get up and down (curtailed by our tactics under Ranieri as much as anything else) and it also underestimates the importance of decision-making - Rosi might be better at la spinta costante, but one doesn't need to be making those runs constantly, so long as you make enough of them at the right times.

I know what the word 'means', gio; its English equivalents, though cover a not inconsiderable connotative range and so I was wondering how you thought it was being used there.

In this context I don't know - that's why I'm asking. Isn't it a rhetorical term - bombastic or puffed-up (the web dictionaries also give "resounding" and "inflated"). In which case it might mean here, effectively, over-hyped, having too much made of it or it could mean something like imperious, in the way a sports commentator would use that term to describe a midfield or a style of play, in which case clearly it's not pejorative at all.

De Laurentiis storms out!



Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis furiously stormed out of the Serie A draw. “I am ashamed to be Italian! I’m going back to cinema.”
The patron had hoped his team would not have difficult fixtures close to the Champions League games. After only a few fixtures had been revealed by the computer, De Laurentiis reacted very angrily.

He swore at the gathered Serie A club Presidents, FIGC members and media in the Lega hall as he walked away.

“It’s all been mapped out against us,” he blasted. “Enough is enough, I’m going back to cinema.

“I’m ashamed to be Italian! I want to change citizenship!”

Napoli will face Milan in Week 3, which is just four days after their Champions League debut.

They’ll also face Inter in Week 6, only three days after the second round of the group phase.

De Laurentiis has long been a vocal critic of the football world, having taken over Napoli in Serie C after their bankruptcy.

He is most famous as part of one of the world’s biggest movie producer dynasties.

In a truly bizarre detail, it's reported De Laurentiis was so eager to get away from the Lega hall that he asked for a lift from a passing teenager on a scooter.

I'm surprised Simplicio's been so forcibly cut out of the picture. I can only think it's simply about trying to free up another non-EU slot on the roster [sic]. He's the other player we already have who'd seem most naturally to fit into the technical mezz'ala role in this 4-3-3.
