Inter romp to victory as Gasperini debuts 3-4-1-2

Inter sailed to a comfortable win over local side Trentino Team as new Coach Gian Piero Gasperini debuted his 3-4-1-2 formation at Pinzolo. The match at Inter's training ground also saw the debuts of new signings Ricky Alvarez and Luc Castaignos who both managed to find the net alongside Pazzini, Eto'o, Pandev and Longo.

Gasperini who has been training his troops in his unique three-man defence got a first view of what his side may look like in the coming season. The ex-Genoa tactician deployed a 3-4-1-2 with Andrea Ranocchia, Cristian Chivu and Walter Samuel, making his first start since his injury last year, as his back three.

Davide Santon who has returned from his loan spell at Cesena and Yuto Nagatomo occupied the wing-back positions while Dejan Stankovic and Sulley Muntair were in the center.

Wesley Sneijder whose future is under much speculation played the first half serving as the link between the midfield and the attacking duo of Giampaolo Pazzini and Samuel Eto'o. After the game, Gasperini reflected on what he had seen on the pitch and stated he was pleased with the players and their adaptability.

"It was a good start that showed us how much enthusiasm there is in this group and we got to see some of the youngsters. The three-man defence won't be a problem and we're not short of men or ideas for different solutions."

Gasperini also reserved special praise for his debutants Castaignos and Alvarez with the latter being particularly impressive after replacing Sneijder towards the end of the first half.

"Alvarez made himself noticed right from the start. I was really impressed by Castaignos and Alvarez: they both showed good movement. The Dutchman is younger but he knows how to time his runs, and Alvarez will be an important player for this team."

Inter will continue their program at their training ground for this week, before heading to Ireland for a friendly tournament against the likes of Manchester City and Celtic.

We played 3-4-1-2 only in the first half. Gasperini changed to a 4-3-3 system in the second with Alvarez and Pandev in wide positions and Castaignos in the center.

We have three great central defenders in Samuel, Lucio and Ranocchia so I don't see why we can't stick with the 3-4-1-2 when all of them are fit. Maicon and Nagatomo as are very attack minded and are full of energy, they can provide the width and Sneijder can play behind the strikers in his favorite position. We have the players to do it, we need to get it right in a tactical sense.

Man to man, Chicu is more flexible than Ranocchia especially when switching from a 3 man defence to a 4 man defence in mid-game. I don't think this alone will make him the automatic choice ahead of Ranocchia. I think it will be on a game to game basis and also depends on the fitness of Nagatomo and other LB/LWB candidates. If I am not wrong Ranocchia has played in a 3 man defence before and IMO with him alongside Samuel, Lucio will have more freedom and cover to bring the ball out of defence like he loves to.

Yes Ranocchia has played in a 3 man defence with Gasperini...but he has occupied what now will be Samuel & Lucio's spots. Chivu's spot as left sided man in a 3 man defence is a peculiar one as he has to alternate from being a central defender to a LB on many occasions during the same match. Chivu is a blessing IMO for that kind of defence. Apart from that, I beleive Chivu to be better than Ranocchia at starting a play transition from defence, especially on counters. Surely Ranocchia will play a lot, especially since we all know Chivu is quite the fragile guy, but I beleive that for big matches, if both are available Chivu will be chosen over Ranocchia.

sneijder centrocampista — Non ci sono Samuel, Pazzini e Nagatomo (il giapponese è tenuto precauzionalmente a riposo per un risentimento alla coscia sinistra), ma recuperano dai piccoli acciacci Ranocchia e Sneijder: l'ex Genoa è nella difesa a tre con Caldirola e Chivu, mentre l'olandese cambia ruolo rispetto al prima uscita. Allora era stato schierato nel tridente, stavolta occupa un ruolo da interno nel centrocampo a quattro, al fianco di Stankovic. Nel tridente ai lati di Eto'o ci sono Alvarez e Pandev. This is where Sneijder would play for ManUre too, I'm pretty sure (though clearly not in a 3-4-3); as I've said a few times, for me he's a technically gifted hard-working midfielder, not a trequartista of true class. He's more suited to playing in a deeper role, despite what the stats of his season under Moaninho might suggest (because the number of goals he scored from dead-ball situations is completely misleading and distracts attention from the fact that for Moaninho, too, his greatest contribution was defensive work-rate, not attacking incisiveness). And those comments on formations are clearly right, briz - the English press are obsessed with formations because that's the only tactical thing they can just about get their heads around. Anything more subtle than that - about roles within a formation or the different ways a position might be interpreted - is beyond them.

He could play in a midfield three with any of your lot, Lomba - stinky (bitch), hairy (motta), Zanetti, etc. etc. I also totally agree with you on Chivu - I have this gut-feeling that had Chivu been born into an age in which the tactical orthodoxy was to play with a back three or with a libero then he might have gone down in history as one of the very finest defenders of his generation. He's just not quite a left back and not quite a dominant centreback in a back four.

Tevez is out of budget for us. Apart from the huge cost to get him out of Man. City, his contract would be a little too much for us to handle. This meeting might be an accident, but also a volontary one...but I quite doubt there is any reason to think there might be something going on. If we sell Sneijder ( after seening him play infront of the defence I am now rooting against a possible departure), we might go for someone 'expensive', but most probably we'd target someone younger and who still has room for improvement. I'd be happy to keep the squad as is + 1 or 2 young dynamic midfielders.
