Barcelona sells striker Bojan Krkic to Roma

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)—Barcelona sold striker Bojan Krkic to Roma on Friday in a complicated deal that could net the Spanish club ?40 million ($58 million)— or cost it ?1 million ($1.4 million).

Barcelona said in a statement the Serie A club agreed to the ?12 million ($17 million) transfer, which includes an obligatory buyback clause at the end of the 2012-13 season when Krkic would cost the Spanish champion ?13 million ($19 million). But if Roma blocks the move, the value of the original transfer improves to ?40 million.

The 20-year-old Krkic, an Under-21 Spain international, scored seven goals from 35 appearances last season, mostly coming off the substitutes’ bench.

Krkic exploded into Barcelona’s squad in 2007-08 when he scored 10 goals and set a record as Barcelona’s youngest scorer in the league at 17. But he was mostly confined to the bench with coach Pep Guardiola’s arrival the following season, and leaves for Italy with 43 goals from 157 appearances over four seasons.

Krkic will join former Barcelona B coach and player Luis Enrique, who was recently hired by Roma.

The deal could be seen as a quick money injection for Barcelona, which paid Udinese ?26 million ($37 million) for Chile forward Alexis Sanchez on Thursday and is currently negotiating with Arsenal over the transfer of Cesc Fabregas.

The European champions went into the summer with a transfer budget of ?45 million ($65 million) and has also spent ?2 million ($2.9 million) on forward Kiko Femenia. Krkic’s move brings the balance to ?29 million ($42 million) with Arsenal eyeing a reported ?40 million for Fabregas.

I believe that "obligatory" is a misleading translation, really. As I understand it, Barca have the right to exercise that option (and so we'd be obliged to accept it, rather than they're obliged to make it). If they don't exercise it, then we will have signed him for a normal fee. If they do exercise it, we could exercise a counter-option which would have us pay 40 mil - if he's scored a million goals for us and we decide he's suddenly worth a gazillion pounds. It's actually a version of the clauses that are built into most loan deals at the moment - though with the discrepancy between the proposed fees wildly exaggerated. We exercised our equivalent options to bring back Guberti and Curci (this seems less likely, since that was co-ownersip, no?) or Crescenzi, I think, earlier in the summer. Barca want to protect themselves from another Fabregas situation - in which they're forced to spend big bucks to bring a player back to the club. If Bojan explodes for us and Barca want him back, we'll have had a very successful player on-loan for two seasons.

Perhaps there's less difference between these alternatives than one might think - given that paying 12 mil. up front would probably actually mean paying 12 mil. in installments over the next 3 or 4 years. Barca probably need the money (or the bank paperwork representing the money) to put against their other deals with Sanchez and, perhaps, Fabregas; on the other hand, our out-lay might not be any more than the original 1 mil, with commitments to pay the rest in due course. Does that sound reasonable? What do I know, though - you're the money man, right?

£28m sounds a lot to make him ours in a couple of years, but who knows what may happen between now and then - let's hope he bangs in the goals.

Menez has been linked with PSG on football-italia.net. I'd be disappointed to see him go, at times last season he was a class above everybody else. Especially for only €8.5m which is what's being reported.

We get Bojan for 12 million. In two years time IF Barca want him back they pay 13 million. We can then counter with an additional 28 million. Barca don't have to exercise their option. If they don't then we get Bojan for 12 million.

Not good news about Menez. I really hope he stays, but I have a feeling the goal of selling him is so that we can use that money to pay for Pastore. I don't like this.

It does depend a bit on how much we would pay for Pastore, Chewna - and on Menez's preparedness to find a position for himself within the 4-3-3. He will have some competition for one of the wide spots - and I'm not sure he really considers himself a 'wing-forward' - and he may not want to play as the regista del tutto campo where I think we'd both like to see him given a chance (he might want to be less attacking than required for the one position and more attacking than required for the other). I suspect Zamparini was also relying on Pastore getting a starring part at the Coppa America to boost his price.
