Yes, red, clearly size per se is much more important for age-group rugby than for football. There may also be important differences between Scotland and England - Scotland has its own positive idiosyncrasy, after all, in the fact, for example, that there are now more managers in the Premiershite who are from Glasgow than there are from the whole of England. In terms of training and developing coaches, then, the Scots are clearly doing something right. 11 vs 11 would certainly reduce the time any individual player got with the ball, mk. I once heard on the radio a coach making what I thought was an especially good point - if you give five or six English youngsters (I think he was talking of kids a bit older than 7) a ball on a pitch, they'll spend their time smashing the ball at the goal. If you do the same thing with a group of 'Spanish' youngsters, they're more likely to play a bit of 3-on-3 keep-ball. Of course the opposition is too clean, but the point stands, I think - our hockey team will do it: without a coach, they'll spend half an hour standing around watching each other smash in long-range shots, which is why I make them do a fair bit of keep-ball stuff.

The problem with that coach's argument to my mind, fonz, is that it starts from the destructive principle that winning is what will keep morale up. Winning is, of course, an easy way to keep morale up, but it's hardly the only one, and if you follow his logic he's only going to change the tactics once changing the tactics makes the team more likely to continue winning. Of course it's difficult if the kids are really getting hammered every week, but one 5-0 result isn't a case of that. And it's lazy not to work on finding other ways for the kids to enjoy even the defeats - say, for instance, enjoying putting together 5 passes without the opposition touching the ball and celebrating that as though it were a real victory in its own right. What a coach really needs to work on is getting the kids to enjoy playing together and involving each other in the play.

In other news, Riise has officially joined Ful-of-ham (and left a nice in which he couldn't resist havin a go), we could be close to signing Kameni (who is useless and prone to brain farts which make Doni look as solid as Michelangelo's David), there's an official presentation planned for tomorrow, although Di Benedetto may not bother to turn up, and we could be close to agreeing a contract extension with DDR.

Is Kameni really that bad? I would have preferred Stekelenburg, but I was in the mindset that Kameni was a safe option to fall back on (without having actually watched him play), so it's a little worrying to hear what you say about him!

He was LE's choice wasn't he? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but I've rarely seen him play.

It does seem like a good price for him alright, but I wonder if its not more a fair reflection of his true value these days which illustrate how much his stock has fallen, and the pessimist in me says he's just a cheap option. But, like Chewna said, he's LE's choice and he knows him well from la Liga, so he should be given the benefit of the doubt. There's one funny incident I remember distinctly when he was playing against Barca a couple of years back:



Not a huge blunder, and it didn't go any damage in the end, but he is prone to the odd howler like this and shows a lack of concentration sometimes, but how much of an upgrade he'll be over what we currently have I don't know.
