Happy with the signing of Lamela. Its been a long, long time since we spent a considerable sum of money on a rising star from South America, and its a good sign of intent for the future, so fair fucks to us. Now if only we could show some concrete interest in signing one of those many top-quality defenders which Maro insists we're linked with everyday to replace Philippe. I see Zapata is on the verge of a move to Villarreal for a paltry €7m, which is flabbergasting. Its only the centre of the defence, like, no big deal, not like it was a problem for us last season or anything. Perhaps we can convince Loria to sign a new contract.

Come dargli torto?
Scherzi a parte, Daniele De Rossi c'è.

Okaka + 28 mil for Pastore - that's the kind of deal fredzo will love.
I value Okaka very highly...I can't even say that I would do that deal straight up, let alone after adding 28 million...Okaka may take some time to become a polished forward, but can be among the very best once he has (Luca Toniesque). We should take a pass him.
I suspect that's may be a little optimistic, -que. If Okaka were the real deal, I think he'd be likely to have had his breakthrough before now; is he not actually older than Bojan? Besides, he's had the master to help him learn his off-the-ball movement. My worry with Okaka has always been that his age-group successes were in no small part based on his being bigger and stronger and faster than the other kids of the same age. I suspect he doesn't enjoy quite the same advantages now. I like him a lot and would love to see him given a chance, but I'm inclined to be persuaded that there's a reason a succession of Roma coaches haven't given him much playing time - and his performances on loan (albeit hampered by injury) have hardly been spectacular.
As you can probably imagine, Fonz, it's a recurrent feature of age-group rugby in New Zealand - it's exacerbated in Auckland because the Polynesian kids tend to develop earlier, physically, than the whities, which means that skilful, gifted, small kids get put off the game after getting battered week-in, week-out by bigger kids. Those sorts of discrepancies even out, generally, once all of the kids grow into their adult bodies, but by then lots of the kids have stopped playing. And in rugby, of course, size and power are even more important than they are in football.
Yeah, good point. I'd forgotten that little furore. It's probably actually what's at the heart of the crapness of English football (this, anyway, is what a lot of pundits say) - in England at age-group level for some reason the focus is on results and so skilful players who make mistakes are criticised and a style of play which is direct, from back to front, and which plays to the strengths of the bigger kids, is encouraged. And the result, in the end, of course, is that the skilful little kids who want to get the ball down and play get pushed out of the game - or, at the very least, aren't, in the end, fostered and given access to the same sorts of training and development and so never get the chance to catch back up.
I totally agree with you, fonz. I've some more thoughts I'll add tomorrow - the guy no doubt also has close to 100 times more coaching pedigree than I do, too, but I guess I've a little bit of experience, at least, if no pedigree, and I think you're completely right and he's being lazy in his argument: there are other ways of stopping the discouragement, after all.
i had read some article recently about the problem of grassroots football in england, where most of the 'peewee soccer' age groups (u7, u10 et al.) play 11v11 on regulation sized fields (like men's football) which basically promotes fitness and booting the ball forward. in spain and italy, kids don't start playing 11v11 on standard fields until the u14 age group, they play 6v6 or 7v7 which gives each player more time on the ball which eventually develops the technical skills. it was a pretty interesting observation to me.
i'd posted the article in the shitbox, it was from the guardian, i'll see if i can find it again.
I'd be surprised if the English were playing on big pitches at that age.
When I was playing kids football, up to the age of about 11-12 it was all seven-a-side and on smaller pitches (the length of the pitch generally being more or less equivalent to the width of an eleven-a-side pitch).
As someone who was bigger and stronger than most going through primary school, I'd say that the size of the pitch wasn't a big factor. The team with the most players capable of kicking the ball reasonably hard and far would generally win.
That then changed once you got to u14s or so, when you'd suddenly come up against teams comprised entirely of kids who were already six foot tall, with maybe one or two skillful players (an Aberdeen based team at my age group won a couple of Scottish Cups using that formula).
All in all, through my time of playing relentlessly from about 7 to 16, winning was rarely anything to do with which team had the most ability.
Aberdeen do things right, though. My brother was in the youth teams for a few years and they used to take some beatings because other SPL teams were just putting out teams of giants, instead of looking to ability.
Aberdeen, to their credit, stuck with trying to get talented players playing in what they considered the right way and are being rewarded with a few really talented players coming through from the generation my brother played with and a couple of years youger than that.
