I'd say both Maggio and Cassani are better right backs than him.

Maggio perhaps, but I'm not so sure about Cassani. I was critical of Abate's defensive capabilities in the past but he seems to have sorted that out and his all round game has improved dramatically, and he's a lot more consistent now. His pace and crossing ability would be useful for the Azzurri too. He deserves a chance.
