What odds will you give me that neither Crescenzi nor Bertolacci are with Roma on September 1, threadddzo?

That could well be the case alright. They may be loaned out again, but there's an element of wishful thinking in the article from Il Romanista that they'll remain and its one which I hope happens. Our new management, along with Sabatini, have indicated that our youth is important element for the future, so hopefully we'll see these young players make up parts of the squad as opposed to bringing in more experienced players from outside (ala Castellini and Simplicio).

The headline I saw earlier suggested they would be at pre-season with the club - presumably where their progress and development will be checked out. I imagine they're rather more likely to start the preseason with the club than to finish it there. It didn't take long, for instance, for Bertolacci to be included in speculation about a deal to bring Hernandez from Palermo. Better to farm out our own youngsters than to take a punt on them ourselves, right?

Of course not, thats why I'm hoping it'll be different with these two. They've both being playing regularly this season with their clubs and both are part of the Azzurrini set-up (although I don't think Bertolacci played due to injury), and I think they are genuinely ready to be back-up players in the squad. Crescenzi for me is a better prospect and could be a good 'vice' Riise next season and should be given a chance, thereby eliminating the need to go out and get someone new for that role. He can also play on the right. Bertolacci is more likely to be loaned out as competition is more fierce in midfield, perhaps. But it all depends on who our new manager will be and what he wants – if that is Montella then it increases the likelihood of our homegrown players coming through, so thats a positive to hope he stays.

Actually I think the whole need-to-play-to-develop cliche' is overstated. Of course match experience is important, but given the proportions of the time you spend each week training and playing, I don't buy that sitting on the bench for 95% of the games, but training week-in, week-out with and against top-class players, isn't going to develop you as a player. For sure you don't want to do it for two or three seasons, especially if you don't see any rise in your playing opportunities, but working on defensive structures and practices alongside top-class defenders and against top-class attackers is surely going to allow you to develop. As you say, the problem is when you drop to third choice (as Rosi when Burdisso has been played at right back), but if they think Crescenzi's got enough about him, I'd be delighted to see him as one of our fullbacks next season. I just think it's more likely that we make a move for two new starting fullbacks.

Good article on Ancelotti from the english Independent. This bit caught my eye:
