Edy Reja admits Lazio “have regrets” after their defeat against 10-man Inter. “It’s still wide open for the Champions League race.” The Biancocelesti would’ve leapt into third place with a victory this afternoon, but despite taking the lead early on with Julio Cesar sent off, they fell 2-1 at San Siro.
“It went badly for us. They scored with a free kick and took advantage of Giuseppe Biava’s slip, so they had two chances and took them. All we got was chances and the woodwork,” said the Coach.
“If we consider this result and the fact Napoli lost, there have to be regrets for missed opportunities.
“It will be a very exciting end to the campaign, as it’s still wide open for the Champions League race.”
Mauro Zarate had converted the penalty to put Lazio in front, but Wesley Sneijder and Samuel Eto’o turned it around.
“We had such a good start, but perhaps tried to over-play it to the gallery when 1-0 up and so wasted a few too many chances on the counter.
“If we go in front and do not maintain that initial intensity, then the result starts to put pressure on us and it’s not right. We should’ve continued playing the way we did when it was goalless.
“I can be fairly satisfied with the performance, though obviously not the result.”
ROME, April 26 (Reuters) - Lazio have been fined 8,000 euros ($11,700) after their fans chanted a racist slogan during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Inter Milan, Serie A said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Rome side, whose supporters gained a reputation in the past for far right wing views, are fourth and with four games to go occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
There was also good news for Lazio in Serie A's disciplinary statement as Udinese, a point behind, will be without midfielder Gokhan Inler for two games after he was sent off for going chest to chest with the referee in their 2-0 loss at home to Parma.
Antonio Di Natale's brace gave Udinese a decisive 2-1 win over Lazio, although the second half was a siege after Gabriele Angella's red card and Mauro Zarate's missed penalty. The Friulani now leap into fourth place.
This was practically a Champions League play-off, as one point separated them in the race for fourth. Both sides were coming off defeats and Lazio had Stefano Mauri and Cristian Ledesma suspended. The Friulani missed Maurizio Domizzi, Gokhan Inler and the injured Andrea Coda.
Antonio Di Natale and Alexis Sanchez were both finally fit again. The Italian had a great chance after six minutes when he sprung the offside trap and went clear on goal, but Nando Muslera rushed off his line to parry. Sanchez put it in the back of the net on the follow-up, but play had already been halted for a push.
Lazio generally had less of the ball, but slowly came out of their shells and also threatened when Mauro Zarate set up Sergio Floccari's wayward header. Hernanes skipped past his marker with some wonderful footwork to skim the upright.
Udinese thought they'd scored when Giampaolo Pinzi sprung the offside trap in midfield and lobbed Muslera, but the ball was just inches past both the far post and Di Natale's desperate attempt to touch it in.
The Friulani incredibly missed an open goal! Sanchez again caught out the Lazio defence and rolled across a perfect assist that Di Natale only had to tap in, but it was inches wide with Muslera already left for dead!
Di Natale made up for it moments later. Sanchez was again the inspiration with a delighftful chipped pass that the veteran trapped with his right toe and smacked an unstoppable screamer across the face of goal into the far top corner.
The Friulani were fired up and tore the Lazio defence apart. Once again, Sanchez flicked up a ball to send Mauricio Isla down the right, passing it back into the centre for an unmarked Di Natale tap-in.
The Biancocelesti defence was a shambles, so Edy Reja replaced the woeful ex-Manchester City man Javier Garrido. A Francelino Matuzalem strike was charged down by Benatia's face, then Isla fired straight at the goalkeeper from a promising position.
Hernanes' header from a Stephan Lichtsteiner cross was just off target, but Tommaso Rocchi came off the bench and made an immediate impact. Within a minute of stepping on to the field his dummy had gone past Gabriele Angella and the late tackle was a penalty. The red card seemed harsh, though, as Cristian Zapata was right behind him to clear up. Hernanes had gone off, so Zarate took the spot-kick and meekly chipped it right into the arms of Samir Handanovic. The goalkeeper didn't even have to move and it's the sixth penalty he's saved this season.
Lazio got back into the game when Zarate whipped in a cross from the left for substitute Libor Kozak's volley from point-blank range under the bar.
The Biancocelesti were now pouring forward and thought they'd equalised with Kozak's glancing header on a Zarate cross, but it came off the far post with Handanovic stranded.
Moments later Andre Dias had the header at the back stick from Rocchi's assist and this time Handanovic got down to palm it off the line from point-blank range.
Pinzi went on the counter and went to ground when he lost his footing as Muslera came out, earning a yellow card for simulation. Zarate again set up a great chance for the equaliser, as Dias flicked on his cross for Rocchi at the back post, but the veteran only managed to collide with the frame of the goal.
Serie A Week 38 - 22/5/11 (19.45 UK) Lecce 2 - 4 Lazio Rocchi 6 (La), Coppola 32 (Le), Zarate 35 (La), Piatti 41 (Le), Zarate pen 54 (La), Vives og 62 (La) Stadio Via Del Mare
Lazio got the victory, but miss out on the Champions League thanks to goal difference.
The Biancocelesti had a slender hope of reaching the Champions League, but to do that they needed a win here and for Udinese to lose at home to Milan. Lecce were in celebratory mood after securing their Serie A safety, although Coach Gigi De Canio announced he would be leaving the club.
Stefan Radu joined Mark Bresciano, Francelino Matuzalem, Mobido Diakite' and Mourad Meghni on the sidelines. Lecce had Nenad Tomovic suspended with Edward Ofere, Ruben Olivera and Stefano Bertolacci among the injuries.
Lazio took the lead after just six minutes. Cristian Ledesma's smart ball over the top released Tommaso Rocchi, who held off Alberto Giuliatto for an angled drive at the near post.
Mesbah's header was deflected wide as Lecce fought back. Mesbah exchanged passes with Gianni Munari to slice the Lazio defence apart and the volleyed finish from Ignacio Piatti was effectively cleared off the line by Andre Dias!
David Di Michele's effort was deflected out for a corner off Javier Garrido, but Mauro Zarate went much closer with an angled drive that cannoned on to the base of the far post.
Rocchi somehow failed to score the second on 28 minutes! The striker had sprung the offside trap in midfield and waltzed round the goalkeeper to deposit into an empty net, but Coppola completed an amazing sprint back to clear off the line. He had to come sliding in for that miracle, landing with his back against the upright and required treatment.
Soon after, Coppola was decisive at the other end too. He sprung the offside trap and lobbed Nando Muslera on the volley with a bizarre effort that may well have been an attempted cross.
Mauro Zarate restored Lazio's advantage and again Rocchi was involved. The Argentine exchanged passes with Rocchi to finish off with a daisy-cutter.
Rocchi set up another chance that Mauri used to skim the woodwork, but it was Lecce who equalised yet again.
A cross from the right was not dealt with by Stephan Lichsteiner, so Ignacio Piatto thumped an angled left-foot drive into the far bottom corner.
Straight after the restart, Zarate managed to miss an open goal. That is often a turn of phrase, but in this case it was literal. He sprung the offside trap, got round the 'keeper and narrowed the angle too much to hit the outside of the near post.
There was a turning point on 52 minutes when Rocchi again got the better of the Lecce defence to run on goal and was felled by a mistimed Benassi intervention. The goalkeeper was sent off and reserve Rosati's first job was to pick Zarate's penalty out of the net, as the Argentine thumped it under the bar.
Still 10-man Lecce would not give in, as Daniele Corvia's angled drive whipped inches past the far post.
However, they shot themselves in the foot with an own goal. The corner was heading nowhere in particular until Vives shinned his clearance, turning it behind him into the net.
Zarate showed strength and resisted challenges to test Rosati, while the goalkeeper also proved decisive on substitute Sergio Floccari from close range by parrying with his legs.
Lecce would not give up and Nando Muslera was forced into a series of late saves on Javier Ernesto Chevanton and Vives.
Reports in Germany suggest Miroslav Klose will sign a two-year contract with Lazio in the next few days. The striker is out of contract with Bayern Munich and has confirmed his negotiations with the Stadio Olimpico outfit.
It’s rumoured that the German international will put pen to paper on a two-year deal worth €1.8m per season plus performance-related bonuses.
Klose celebrates his 33rd birthday on Thursday and said he was “excited” about a new adventure in Serie A.
He is the second most prolific striker in Germany’s history with 61 goals in 109 international caps, just eight behind the legendary Gerd Muller.
Will be interesting to see how Klose does at the Olimpico and how he will fit in, i must say i've admired him ever since i seen him in the '02 WC, class striker! Glad to see him in Italia.
What does "more like Klose" mean? They're gonna sign more dried-up 30+ has-beens? More like Klose me arse. I can't believe they're willing to let Muslera go. Its over a contract dispute or something? As much as I don't like to admit, he is a very fine keeper, and I'd be surprised if he ends up going to Galatasaray.
Federico Marchetti’s agent is confident that the Cagliari ‘keeper will end up joining capital outfit Lazio.
Cagliari tried to swap Marchetti with Milan’s Marco Amelia yesterday, but the latter refused to leave the Rossoneri.
Such a negotiation has subsequently raised doubts about Marchetti’s proposed transfer to the Biancocelesti.
“There has been a handshake with Lazio President Claudio Lotito,” the Italian’s agent Beppe Bozzo told Radio Radio.
“I think that, at the end of the day, the move to Lazio will happen and our position has not changed,” he added.
“We have a deal with Lazio and all they have to do is pay the €5.2m rescission clause in his contract before the end of August.
“However, I think that Marchetti’s future will be resolved a lot sooner than that.”
Lazio are chasing a new custodian given that Fernando Muslera is expected to leave the Stadio Olimpico after failing to agree terms over a new contract.
Lazio have announced the arrival of four players as the Rome-based side continue to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.
Full-back Abdoulay Konko has joined from Genoa while goalkeeper Federico Marchetti arrives from Cagliari. Senad Lulic comes from Swiss club Young Boys, and Marius Stankevicius moves to Rome from Sampdoria.
A statement on the club's official website on Monday reads: "S.S Lazio communicates to have signed Senad Lulic, Abdoulay Konko and Federico Marchetti.
"S.S Lazio also communicates the permanent acquisition of Marius Stankevicius from Sampdoria."
Following the confirmation of the four players, Tuttomercatoweb.com reports Djibril Cisse may be the latest arrival for Edy Reja's men.
The Panathinaikos striker is expected to sign with Lazio this week.
Djibril Cissè is officially a Lazio player after passing his medical. “Miroslav Klose is austere, Cissè more extrovert,” said President Claudio Lotito.
The former Liverfekkin'wankscum striker completed his transfer from Panathinaikos for €5.8m spread out over three years.
He flew in to Rome this morning and was welcomed by 300 fans before passing his medical and penning a four-year contract, said to be worth €2.1m per season.
“Klose is German and represents an austere style, so you can tell how reserved he is,” said President Lotito.
“Cissè, on the other hand, stands out with his extrovert nature. Both are important players, but individuals must be put towards helping the collective. There are no idols.”
The patron assured there would be no vast spectacle to welcome Cissè.
“That’s not my style, as I am more pragmatic. I’ll present him to fans the same way I present everyone.”
Haha the former Liverfekkin'wankscum striker. I remember when he got his terrible injury, at Rovers in late 2004. Never thought he'd fully recover from that, so fair play to him for doing well since - but let's hope he doesn't do too well at Lazio.
