In a weekend full of interesting results, Palermo’s 4-0 thumping at Sicilian rivals Catania threw the Rosanero back into crisis, as Maurizio Zamparini sacked Serse Cosmi and reinstated Delio Rossi, reversing a decision taken five weeks prior.
Palermo’s form going into the derby was unimpressive. However, Week 30’s surprise 1-0 win over Milan suggested they had turned a corner, as the first time Cosmi’s defend and counter-attack tactics had worked. This weekend was the opportunity to follow that up with a psychologically significant result over Catania. In Diego Simeone, Cosmi even faced a Coach who was similarly as uncertain of his strongest XI as he was.
However, focus fell on Cosmi’s team selection as Javier Pastore – who scored a hat-trick in the reverse fixture – and Fabrizio Miccoli were benched in favour of Abel Hernandez and Mauricio Pinilla. The result that followed ended Cosmi’s brief spell, with Zamparini citing those decisions as the influencing factor.
Where does this leave Palermo? For Zamparini, Rossi’s return only opens up a situation that regardless of the end result, brings his handling of the situation into further disrepute.
Should Rossi fail to improve the situation, it can be pinned on Zamparini’s double-management change inside five weeks. Should Rossi turn things around, it would only further incite criticism of Zamparini’s decision to originally sack him, and further enrage fans should their previously untenable working relationship deteriorate again. After all, he brings back a Coach he was unable to keep a poor personal relationship with out of the public domain, at the same time as replacing a Coach in Cosmi he had happily described as a long-term appointment.
Such is the feeling between Rossi and Zamparini, and given how their relationship ended last time, it is unlikely any arrangement could extend long term, or even beyond the summer. This raises the question of what purpose his reintroduction serves to a team not in danger of relegation, and most likely out of contention for Europe.
Whilst Zamparini’s actions return a popular Coach to his players, they continue a dangerous message to the dressing room of where responsibility lays. Whilst everyone cites the President’s meddling as to blame, and the President says it was his Coaches’ doing, there is less focus than normal on the players’ role in a run of six defeats from seven. Given the Milan showing, their performances in the previous five games and subsequent one at Catania are still of concern, regardless of Coach.
Importantly, whilst Cosmi’s decisions were easy to criticise – as Zamparini demonstrated – we were not privy to the full state of affairs. He walked into a disjointed dressing room and it is impossible to tell whether the poor results and strange team selections were purely down to his inability to motivate and focus the players, or their inability to accept Rossi’s initial departure with professionalism.
Leaving no-one but Rossi looking good, Zamparini’s actions at least now return focus to on-the-pitch matters. However, given the past five weeks, it will be interesting to see how Rossi and Zamparini’s relationship fares with tough games against Milan, Roma and Napoli on the horizon.
Paolo Maldini "Il Sogno di ogni attaccante e' segnare il piu' bella gol della storia. L'incubo e' incontrare il miglior difensore del mondo."
Francesco Totti "Never give up Pippo,You are an example for all of us to never give up."
I've been searching the phpbb help section and i cant find anything on it. It may be that no one has raised the issue before but I cant imagine that being the case. I will ask there again.
EDIT: Never mind, just found the answer. Second post done the trick. It seems i needed to click the 'allow quick reply' option again and select enable in all sub-forums. Sorted.
ROME, April 7 () - Sacked Palermo coach Serse Cosmi says he was told to drop top striker Fabrizio Miccoli by the club president in the latest wacky episode at the Serie A club. SERIE A
Featuring a "real diamond", a slighted captain, an "old doctor", an outspoken president, two jilted coaches, three shock results and an unlikely reunion, the last two months at the Sicilian club have been straight out of a soap opera. Cosmi, who was dismissed within hours of Palermo's 4-0 defeat at island rivals Catania on Sunday, said captain Miccoli had asked to be left out of the team after hearing that president Maurizio Zamparini preferred Javier Pastore.
"At 10 o'clock on Sunday morning, president Zamparini asked me what the team was. I told him Pastore was out and Miccoli in. He went into a rage and we had a huge argument," Cosmi told the Gazzetta dello Sport website (http://www.gazzetta.it) on Thursday. Then just before the game, Miccoli came up to me with tears in his eyes and said, 'coach, look after yourself. Leave me out -- I know everything'."
But instead of playing Pastore, who he describes as a "real diamond", Cosmi picked Uruguayan Abel Hernandez as the forward, saying the Argentine was weary after being away with the national team. Cosmi, whose one-month tenure had brought victory against leaders AC Milan but three defeats, became Zamparini's 18th victim in his nine years as Palermo owner.
Then in a surprising twist, Delio Rossi -- casualty No.17 who the colourful president roared had "ruined my Palermo" after a record 7-0 home defeat to Udinese in February -- was persuaded to return to the dugout.
"I knew he would be mad at me," said Zamparini, who calls Rossi the "old doctor". "But I phoned and told him I had made a mistake and that he was the one who could get the team to play as they had done in the first half of the season. Cosmi didn't know the team, he was confused and the players didn't accept him."
Last term Rossi led Palermo to an impressive fifth in Serie A, just missing out on the Champions League qualifiers. Palermo, who are eighth and meet Milan in the semi-finals of the Italian Cup later this month, host Cesena on Sunday when the president is not expected to give his usual post-match analysis.
"I promised Rossi that I would no longer speak to reporters after matches," Zamparini said.
They're all over the shop. Its quite likely Zamperini will fire Rossi before the seasons out, but no manager can really expect to build anything working under a president like that.
The Palermo fans were protesting outside the stadium after they blew that lead to Cesena:
Wednesday 13 April, 2011 Carrozzieri back from two-year ban
Moris Carrozzieri’s two-year doping ban has expired. “I never thought of giving in, thanks to the support from Palermo.” The defender failed a drugs test for cocaine in April 2009, but was handed a minimum wage contract to stay with the Rosanero throughout his ban.
“It is so wonderful to be back,” he said. “I have to thank my family, my girlfriend, the fans, my teammates and obviously President Maurizio Zamparini.
“He made sure I never felt alone, immediately renewed my contract and there is a special rapport with him.
“Now it is up to me to pay back Zamparini’s faith.”
Carrozzieri’s ban expires this week, although he is not yet in match fit condition.
“I am still only 70 per cent, but on Saturday I will play for the youth team. I do a double training session in the morning, then train with the squad in the afternoon.
“I want to put this horrible time behind me and hope Delio Rossi can throw me into the mix soon.
“I never thought of giving in, thanks to the support from Palermo.”
Serie A Week 33 - 16/4/11 (17.00 UK) Roma - Palermo Stadio Olimpico
Roma face another big test of their Champions League credentials in a match that doubles as an audition for some of Palermo’s players.
Roma’s prospective new owner Thomas Di Benedetto has reportedly acquired the services of former Palermo sporting director Walter Sabatini, leading to speculation that the Rosanero’s Javier Pastore, Cesare Bovo and Abel Hernandez could join the capital club in the summer.
Essentially that’s the problem for both of these teams – they’re already living in the future. Rome is awash with rumours regarding the big name Coaches and top class players that Di Benedetto’s money could lure to the Olimpico. If all the gossip is affecting the side, then it doesn’t show.
Last Saturday’s 2-1 win away to Udinese was as crucial as it was dramatic. The Giallorossi still lie 6th but are now just three points adrift of Udinese and four away from neighbours Lazio, who currently occupy the hallowed 4th place.
Champions League qualification seemed like a long shot a few weeks ago but is now a very real possibility and the credit must go to caretaker Vincenzo Montella, who has far exceeded expectations in his brief spell at the helm so far.
The visitors also have one eye on the summer, partly due to the speculation surrounding their playing staff and partly because it’s difficult to imagine the awkward alliance between Maurizio Zamparini and Delio Rossi lasting much longer than the end of the season.
The President spent months berating his Coach then sacked him in the wake of February’s 7-0 defeat to Udinese, only to reinstate him two weeks ago after another thumping at the hands of Sicilian rivals Catania.
Rossi’s return seemed to have had the desired effect when his charges raced into a 2-0 lead against Cesena last weekend, but the Aquile were held to a draw having suffered a humiliating collapse, conceding twice in stoppage time.
With Philippe Mexes injured and Juan suspended Montella may field Marco Cassetti as an auxiliary centre-back. Julio Sergio is Roma’s only other absentee.
Giulio Migliaccio, Ezequiel Munoz and Pastore return from suspension for Palermo, meaning that Rossi has almost all the ingredients to play his favoured 4-3-2-1. However Josip Ilicic’s injury should see him field a 4-3-1-2, Fabrizio Miccoli accompanied by Mauricio Pinilla up front.
Keep an eye on: Francesco Totti (Roma) – Il Capitano is in his best form since Luciano Spalletti’s reign, and it’s no coincidence, seeing that Montella has returned to Spalletti’s 4-2-3-1 system, which makes Totti the focal point of the Giallorossi attack. The 34-year-old has three doubles in his last four games.
Last five in Serie A: Roma (W W D L W) Palermo (L L W L D)
Last season: Roma 4-1 Palermo
Top tip: Another week working with the players will have done Rossi and his squad the world of good, but Roma are in much better form and have more to play for. Home win.
Stat fact: 8th placed Palermo have the second worst defensive record in the division with a whopping 52 goals conceded, just one less than Lecce.
Roma (probable): Doni; Cassetti, Loria, Burdisso, Riise; Pizarro, De Rossi; Taddei, Perrotta, Vucinic; Totti
Zamperini is fucking ridiculous. This could well be the end of this Palermo side, a lot of their big players may now want to follow Rossi out the door:
Rossi leaves Palermo – official – Wednesday 1 June, 2011
Palermo are looking for a new Coach after the club confirmed the departure of Delio Rossi this afternoon. The tactician held talks with President Maurizio Zamparini today, but both men opted to go their separate ways.
An exit was expected given that Rossi was sacked earlier this season before being recalled following Serse Cosmi’s problems. Rossi was initially appointed as Rosanero boss in November 2009 when he replaced the axed Walter Zenga.
The former Lazio tactician was handed a contract until June 2011, with an option for a further season. Stefano Pioli, who recently left Chievo after keeping them in the top flight, is now being paired with the Palermo hotseat.
Oh dear. Why would anybody in their right mind want to work for Zamparini? I don't mind Palermo and was impressed with the way they placed against Inter but in one way I do hope Pastore, Illicic etc leave just to put two fingers up at Zamparini.
