Galliani ready to pounce if defender does not sign Roma deal

AC Milan have reiterated an interest
in signing Philippe Mexes if the
Roma defender does not sign a new contract.


Mexes' current deal at Roma expires in the summer and he has yet to agree an extension at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Frenchman has been strongly linked with a move to Milan, although the Serie A leaders last month denied an agreement is already in place.
However, the Rossoneri's vice-president Adriano Galliani has confirmed that the club would be willing to sign Mexes on a free transfer.
"If Mexes does not renew his contract with Roma, we are interested in the player," Galliani told Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 28-year-old joined Roma from Auxerre in 2004 and has been identified as a possible replacement for Milan defender Alessandro Nesta, whose contract also ends in the summer.

i don't expect to maintain our five point lead over inter. nevertheless, it will be depressing once they surpass us. i am disappointed we keep playing with three defensive midfielders (or is it four now?) but at least we are starting to scrape wins. against tottenham, a nil-nil will not be enough and we will go out.

Gattuso: This Milan is incredible
Rino Gattuso thinks this current Milan side is “incredible” and that it has more than honoured the name of the club.

The veteran midfielder scored a rare goal on Saturday night to inflict defeat on Juventus in Turin.

It ensured Milan maintained their five-point lead over Inter at the top of Serie A.

Speaking to the Milan Channel, Gattuso said: “Milan are not ready to win the Champions League.

“It seems like Milan haven't won anything. It seems that we are Longobarda, a little team.

“However, it's enough to walk into one of the rooms in Via Turati to see what Milan has been in recent years. It deserves respect.

“It will be very tough against Tottenham, but we are not top of Serie A by chance.

“We must go to London and try to do it.

“I am certain that we'll have a little extra anger for what happened at San Siro where we didn't deserve to lose.

“The lads could make me a present. They could put something extra in for me.

“This group is incredible, keeping Ibrahimovic at bay all week isn't easy.

“Ibra never shuts up. We have many champions and it becomes ever more difficult in training: no-one wants to lose, everyone says his bit and every now and again even the mister gets angry.

Fair enough. In some ways I don't too as it may highlight to Galliani and Berlusconi and co. that all is not right with Milan and also Italian football in general at the moment, but I also really want you to stuff those english cnuts and shut them up for a while.

but while i don't expect us to win the cl this year, going out to tottenham is the worst way to exit.

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale will be given until Wednesday to prove his fitness for their Champions League last-16 second-leg tie with AC Milan. Manager Harry Redknapp said Bale trained on Tuesday and showed no ill-effects from his long-standing back problem, but his legs were a bit stiff.

"His back's fine but he was stiff in the legs," stated Redknapp. "It's touch and go. We'd love to start with him but if he's not quite right I wouldn't want to take a chance."

There is better news on Dutch playmaker Rafael van der Vaart, who has not played since Spurs' first-leg 1-0 win in Milan because of a calf injury.

"Van der Vaart has a good chance for Wednesday, I hope he'll be fit," said Redknapp.

Winger Bale made his first appearance since 22 January when he came on as a substitute in Sunday's 3-3 Premiershit draw at Wolves.

"When Gareth came on and started to run with the ball, it was exciting," added Redknapp. "We've missed that for the last five or six weeks.

"That was his first real exertion for six weeks. He started straight away to run with the ball and when he does that, he scares people to death.

"He carries the game at the opposition and that makes a massive difference."

Milan beat Juventus 1-0 on Sunday ahead of the second leg at White Hart Lane and while Redknapp is planning an attacking strategy, he is concerned by his side's defensive frailties.

In addition to the goals conceded at Wolves, Tottenham also let in three at Blackpool in their previous fixture.

"There were lots of positives for me from the [Wolves] game but we just didn't defend well in a couple of positions and that is a problem," stated the Spurs manager.

"Conceding goals is a concern. Conceding three at Blackpool was a concern. It is disappointing to let three goals in, especially when you score three."

The Italians will be missing three key players for the match - Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini are both injured, and Gennaro Gattuso was already ruled out through suspension even before he launched his notorious post-match attack on Spurs coach Joe Jordan.

Coach Massimo Allegri recognised his side could not afford to repeat their first-leg display but he had confidence in their ability to overturn the deficit.

"We can do it because we're a strong team and we're in good shape, physically and mentally," he commented.

"The first leg was a strange game. We know that Tottenham is a strong team and we can't commit the errors made at the San Siro."

Bale, who produced a dazzling one-man show when Spurs played Milan's neighbours Inter in the group stages, has attracted the attention of the Serie A outfit.

Allegri said he was all too aware of the threat the Welshman posed but he felt they could deal with him.

"He's a very important player with great physical and technical attributes but Tottenham isn't just Bale," he stated.

says inter only have a 17% chance to finish ahead of us in the league, though that can be as low as 2% (if we beat them heads up) or 34% (if they beat us)

hearing about seedorf crying after the game was pretty sad. the shit hit home because at the end of this season, win or lose, we will be letting go some of the greatest players to have worn the rossoneri, namely seedorf and nesta, pirlo might be on that list too. i really hope that seedorf comes back to hold a managerial position in the club, he is a great ambassador for football, and he would give the club quality representation.

yeah, seedorf will go down as one of my all -time favorites. out of the many (dozens?) of milan shirts in my closet back in canada, i brought two to paris: seedorf's and maldini's.

has it already been decided that nesta will not be offered a new contract and he will be retiring?
