He can't sign an actual contract just now, since he is still under contract with Roma, which is what I assume Ita is getting at.

gio, i am under the impression that a player can SIGN a binding contract with anybody in the last 6 months of his contract. the examples i'd give are when beckham moved from real to the galaxy, he already signed a contract with the galaxy when he had that big press conference. another example is when wee signed urby emanuelson from ajax. we signed him mid-january tocome this summer. but then we offered ajax 1m euros to let him come in january. ajax knew that since he signed with milan, they couldnt hope for him renewing witht them so they just let him go earlyand made some quick buck.

i could be wrong though, but it alsoworked like that in football manager, and thats a real as it gets .

There is no regulation to prevent him from signing a binding contract which states that it starts on 1 July 2011, the day after his contract with Roma ends.

Gio, do you remember the case of the 'bosman' transfer involving Steve McManaman's to Real Madrid back in whenever it was, 1999? McManaman's contract was expiring and there was quite a big deal when he announced in January that he was joining Madrid for free when his contract expired at the end of the season. Of course, he still had to play the remainder of the season with his current club (can't recall who it was), but in effect he had signed a pre-contract with Madrid at that time. I remember it also involved him flying to Madrid and having a medical and actually signing this pre-contract, the media were all over it, all while still being a player of his current club at the time.
