The fact is that this game was merely the culmination of a huge under-performance this season and the most common theme throughout - even if it is by no means the only one - has been Ranieri's poor coaching and frequent irrational decisions.

Anyway, we can blame the players for sure: JS was terribly at fault for the first goal and the third goal showed his limitations, too (a top-class keeper is athletic enough to keep that out); the breakdown in communication for the second goal between Riise and Burdisso was very poor; Totti's miss into Criscito was terrible after such good work from Taddei and Menez; Greco, bless him, lacks personalita' and got bullied out of the game and over-run. The bottom-line, though, remains that at 3-1 the game looked headed for 4-3, as I said at the time. And Ranieri's interventions rather than working to remedy that seemed quite clearly to hasten the collapse.

OFFICIAL: RANIERI HAS RESIGNED
“I always thought of what was best for Roma, so after today’s game I thanked the team and resigned,” announced Claudio Ranieri.

There had been reports the Coach had tended his resignation following a shock turnaround from 3-0 up at Genoa to lose 4-3.

When the squad flew back to Rome this evening for a crisis meeting at the Trigoria training ground, including President Rosella Sensi and the players who were injured or suspended for today’s match.

There is currently a summit meeting to pick Ranieri’s successor, who is likely to be current youth academy tactician Vincenzo Montella.

I've always maintained that Ranieri is nothing but a stop-gap tinkering gittery old motherfucker. Ah no, in fairness to him, its been an extremely difficult season, even by Roma's mad fuckin standards, and it would be hard for anyone trying to manage this team with all the shit thats gone on. I feel sorry for him in a lot of respects, and part of me thinks the best thing for us would of been for him to continue until the end of the season and try push for CL rather than making changes now.

Montella as caretaker manager until the end of the season – when perhaps the ownership issues and plans for the future are more clear – is the most likely plan of action now I reckons. It sounds good in theory, but he has very little managerial experience. He's been in charge of Giovanissimi Nazionali (under 15's I think) for the last year or so and I believe he's done well there, but its a big step up.

Rosella has we will know who are new coach is tomorrow. Quite soon to be announcing such a move, so its probably someone from within the organisation. She also makes it sound like it will be an official 'full-time' manager and not in any temporary or caretaker role.

I think they had Montella lined up for awhile now. There were reports of him taking over should Ranieri have left about a week or so ago. Whoever comes in knows that nothing is permanent until the new owners take over.

You know, I'll throw my 2 cents in here cuz I'm a baller like that. I throw money around, bitches. How is a team supposed to build and be competitive if they are constantly changing coaches every 2 years?? Same goes for Juve. When is it NOT the coaches' fault?? I thought Ranieri was doing good things at Roma considering last season's results. Things aren't going his way this year but it happens especially when you don't have money to invest in players. I blame a lot of that on your captain. You can only conclude that things spiraled out of control when Ranieri and Totti had their spats. Totti is clashing with many of your coaches, that's a bad example for the players around him. If he shits on the coach and doesn't play for him, why should any of the other players??? The loss against Shaktar wasn't THAT bad. The media made a real big shit about that. Ok, you blew a 3 goal lead today. That's unacceptable but no need to resign. Ranieri loved coaching Roma.
