I'm not sure that's a fair assessment, Frence'. Sure you could attribute his "poor" performance this season to age, speed, and laziness (though I'm not convinced that's a good argument), but you could also attribute it (more correctly I believe) to playing a role that does not really suit his strengths. From what I saw yesterday, Totti was good. Very good. So what was so different this time? The difference was that we had players who willing to move off the ball, and they did that pretty well. I guarantee that if our players were more dedicated to movement off the ball, and more willing to commit forward than they have been this season, Totti would shine again (and so would the rest of team).

(Gazzetta dello Sport - S.Boldrini) - Da una parte un allenatore capace di scontentare tutti con scelte di formazioni spesso discutibili ed atteggiamenti ambigui, dall’altra un gruppo di giocatori in cui le vicende personali — giocare sempre e confrontare i propri stipendi— prevalgono spesso sul bene comune.

La Roma è questa. È l’esatto contrario di quello che racconta da giorni Claudio Ranieri: se il sondaggio fosse segreto come il voto, il consenso dell’allenatore sarebbe al minimo storico. Da luglio ad oggi, diversi giocatori hanno avuto confronti più o meno accesi con il tecnico. Con Borriello, insultato ieri da un paio di tifosi, con tanto di manate sull’auto, il rapporto è stato tormentato dall’inizio. Il primo battibecco ci fu in Napoli-Roma del 3 ottobre 2010, quando l’attaccante fu sostituito («io stanco? Stavo benissimo» ), l’ultimo l’altra sera («sto fuori io che ho segnato 25.000 gol» , «la prestazione di Borriello mi ha dato ragione» la replica dell’allenatore). Ieri l’ennesimo chiarimento, in cui Borriello ha detto a Ranieri «non volevo mancarle di rispetto» . Arrivederci alla prossima puntata.

Con Totti, diventato improvvisamente uno come gli altri, e quindi anche lui esposto al turn over, lo scambio di idee ci fu dopo Bayern-Roma (15 settembre), quando il capitano giallorosso parlò di «calcio antico» . Dopo il chiarimento, un periodo di pace, con Totti che difese la posizione dell’allenatore, fino alla gaffe di Ranieri che contro la Sampdoria (11 gennaio 2011) mandò in campo Totti al 90’ . «Guarda che è finita» , disse Francesco con la solita ironia. «Non mi ero accorto che eravamo al 90’» , la risposta quasi provocatoria dell’allenatore.

Con Pizarro il rapporto si è sbriciolato giorno dopo giorno, fino alla fuga in Cile a Natale. Il Pek sembrava guarito e pronto per lo Shakhtar, ma all’improvviso si è chiamato fuori: una piccola vendetta? Con Burdisso, fortissimamente voluto da Ranieri, i contrasti sono scoppiati in autunno: dissensi sul gioco e sulla gestione del fratello Guillermo. Poi ci sono i portieri. Julio Sergio ha perso consensi. Lobont, promosso vice, si è ritrovato in tribuna. Doni, che nello spogliatoio è considerato il migliore dei tre, vive ormai alla giornata. Finita? Macché. Menez quando vede Ranieri e pensa a Blanc s’intristisce. Vucinic era arrivato al punto di chiedere di essere ceduto a gennaio. Domanda: sarebbe questo il clima idilliaco di cui blatera Ranieri?

Come on, there is nothing to discuss, Ranieri has ruined the entire season with his irrational decisions.

Did you see the game? The third and fourth goals came almost entirely from playing with a back 3 when the players clearly didn't know how to play it together. We were getting over-run in the midfield from well before the second Genoa goal; I said in the sb that the most likely result at that stage was already a Genoa win. Instead of securing the midfield (the obvious option would have been to get Brighi to play as the bottom of the diamond and give us a physical presence as Greco wasn't contributing much going either way; an alternative would, presumably, have been to bring on Pizarro who would at least have got his foot on the ball and might have taken the sting out of the game that way), be brought on Menez which not only conceded the midfield but also changed the formation which meant that instead of roaming all over the place and controlling the game, Totti played higher, more static, contributed less. Borriello off for Menez and we win. Greco off for Pizarro and we win. Maro not Ranieri on the bench and we win. Fact. And sodomy.
