Inter “made enquiries to understand the current situation” of Malaga Coach Manuel Pellegrini, revealed his agent.
Despite the fact Andrea Stramaccioni’s side are four points adrift of Serie A leaders Juventus and through to the next round of the Europa League, it seems President Massimo Moratti is not entirely confident of keeping him in future.
“Several foreign clubs have already made important offers for Pellegrini,” explained agent Jesus Martinez on FCInterNews.it.
“Inter also made enquiries to understand the current situation, although they never went so far as to make a direct offer.
“Other clubs tested the waters, but knowing that he has a contract with Malaga, the approaches were tepid.
“His intention is to stay at Malaga, although the economic uncertainty could see the club project change.”
did anyone notice the ref for the JUBE game ? i cant believe is still around,is last game was a disgrace no to mention the previus ones ,to do good in italy you jave to be a no hoper jerk.i will be looking at the game just because of him
Inter captain Javier Zanetti has become the latest Nerazzurri player to comment on the Wesley Sneijder contract situation.
The Dutch international has been told he will not play again for the San Siro side unless he takes a pay cut, and could be sold in January with reports suggesting Schalke and Manchester United are interested.
But the Argentine defender has admitted that the club need to be sensible in this time of economic hardship.
“In this economic crisis, we need some common sense,” he told reporters today. “After that, the decision is up to Sneijder.
“He is going through a difficult time, but he will decide what is best for him.
“I do not know if [Coach Andrea] Stramaccioni will call him up, but I can tell you that he is training well.”
Carlo Ancelotti is “disappointed” with Javier Pastore at PSG and Maurizio Zamparini confirms Inter would like him as a replacement for Wesley Sneijder.
There were reports over the last few days that Sneijder could exchange places with former Palermo creative midfielder Pastore at Paris Saint-Germain during the transfer window.
PSG Coach Ancelotti poured fuel on that particular fire by declaring “Pastore has disappointed me with his performances, but I expect he is disappointed with the way he’s playing too.”
This is not the first time that Argentine Pastore has been linked with Inter, as confirmed by Palermo President Zamparini.
“Massimo Moratti had already shown interest in Pastore before I sold him to Paris Saint-Germain, while Marco Branca had discussed it with my director of sport.
“However, then Leonardo’s offer came in from PSG and nobody could compete with that amount of money.
“PSG are not stupid, so I doubt they will let him go easily. Why is he struggling in Paris? It’s not easy playing with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.”
Inter 1 - 0 Palermo Garcia og 74 (I) Stadio Giuseppe Meazza
Inter needed more than a bit of luck to get the better of Gian Piero Gasperini’s Palermo, winning only thanks to an own goal.
Gasperini managed only five official games in charge of Inter before he was sacked last season, but here returned at the helm of Palermo and hoped to get revenge. Ironically, Andrea Stramaccioni has implemented many of the changes Gasp saw shot down – a three-man defence, signing Rodrigo Palacio and dropping Wesley Sneijder.
Antonio Cassano continued his ban with Dejan Stankovic, Joel Obi, Cristian Chivu and Gaby Mudingayi injured. Palermo had Fabrizio Miccoli and Massimo Donati suspended, joining the sidelined Nicolas Bertolo, Abel Hernandez and Andrea Mantovani.
Milito and Franco Brienza had efforts charged down, while Il Principe curled inches past the far top corner, as both teams took a long time to get into gear.
Esteban Cambiasso’s volley was straight into the goalkeeper’s arms, while Palacio’s deflected pull-back was just behind Philippe Coutinho. Eros Pisano charged down another Milito effort.
Andrea Ranocchia threatened with a shot charged down, then it came back to his feet to blast over the bar.
Inter were uninspired and Fredy Guarin replaced Milito, immediately testing Samir Ujkani with a cross-shot. Dybala fired over at the end of a solo effort, but Palermo shot themselves in the foot.
A Ranocchia cross from the right was going nowhere in particular until Santiago Garcia came sliding in to accidentally turn it into his own net. This was the second own goal that Inter had benefited from in three rounds.
Andrea Stramaccioni admits Inter had some luck to beat Palermo and insists the club is not ‘bullying’ Wesley Sneijder.
The Nerazzurri scraped to a 1-0 victory thanks to Santiago Garcia putting through his own net.
“At a time like this when we are not at our best, I liked the attitude of the team and the consistent performance,” said the Coach.
“In the second half we dipped in form again, then the goal made it all easier. We have specific characteristics and a structure that has to feed the strikers. Diego Milito just about passed a fitness test to be here and gave his contribution.
“We played as well as we could right now, allowing Palermo only long-range efforts and that is an important sign.
“I replaced Milito with Fredy Guarin because we were too crammed into the Palermo box and I wanted to create some space with a player further away from the area. Thankfully it went well. Antonio Cassano has different characteristics to Philippe Coutinho, so we couldn’t take the same approach we had against Juventus.”
Stramaccioni had said in Saturday’s Press conference that Sneijder was available, but then did not call him up amid a contract dispute. Inter have declared he won’t play again until he agrees to lower his wages, which has prompted some to suggest they are ‘bullying’ or even ‘blackmailing’ the Dutchman.
“In the current situation, I am deciding not to call Sneijder. He knows that. In other times, my appreciation for him as a player has been unequivocal and our personal rapport is also excellent, so I hope he can return.
“I must make choices that have nothing to do with his contract. Tomorrow there will be a meeting and I hope it’ll go well.
“Everyone must remember that Inter come before everything else. As for ‘bullying,’ I have a law degree and can tell you this situation does not qualify for breach of contract.”
Wesley Sneijder has released a brief statement in which he has underlined that he won’t sign a reduced wage contract at Inter.
The club want the player, who has been left out of the side in recent weeks, to accept a cut in his €6m salary in return for a longer deal – from 2015 to 2016 – at San Siro.
Sneijder and his agent met with club officials on Monday to discuss the situation, but the player has made it clear that he won’t put pen to paper on the proposed terms.
“At this moment in time I have no reason to sign,” the former Real Madrid man commented. “How can I accept a new contract under these conditions when I am not even playing?
“As it stands, my decision is to not sign for Inter.”
Sneijder’s decision will come as a blow to the club and President Massimo Moratti who, earlier today, was hopeful that a resolution would be reached.
“I’m convinced that, with good sense, there can be a solution,” Moratti told Sky Sport Italia. “There is a certain amount of satisfaction from Inter, now it is up to the player.”
The midfielder hasn’t played since he was asked to accept a cut, but Moratti insists he has not been frozen out of the side.
“He’s one of our players and he will play, or is at least available, for the Coach and for me. But he’ll play when he is ready and not because his name is Sneijder.”
Inter President Massimo Moratti shot down reports of a swap between Wesley Sneijder and PSG star Javier Pastore. “We’ll keep Wesley, as he is the best out there.”
The rumours emerged after the Dutchman refused to sign a new contract that would lower his €6m per season wages.
In turn, Paris Saint-Germain could offload Pastore after Coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed he was “disappointed” with the former Palermo player.
“An exchange between Pastore and Sneijder? No, we’ll keep Wesley, as he is the best out there,” Moratti told Sky Sport Italia.
“There has already been too much talk about Sneijder. The problem is in the media more than anything else and I have an excellent rapport with the lad.
“When he returns to the disposal of Andrea Stramaccioni, he will be an added bonus for the squad.”
Inter have made it clear Sneijder will not play again until he resolves the contract dispute.
Inter’s decision to start a cost-cutting exercise mid-season with one of the best players in the world is bizarre, writes David Swan.
There was only so long that Inter could convince us that Wesley Sneijder’s injury was taking time to rehab before they had to be truthful with the situation, if only for the sake of their medical staff, who were looking increasingly foolish as the story dragged on.
The truth, now that the renegotiation of his contract is out in the open, creates even more unanswered questions than before. The official line is that Inter want to reduce their wage bill, and as top earner, and the joint highest paid player in Italy at €6m per season, Sneijder must be the first to take a cut.
The move to cut wages makes perfect sense from the club’s point of view. Financially they are not in great shape and, like their city cousins, salaries is an area where cutbacks need to be made.
But their choice of player to start the operation – a 28-year-old international who is one of the best in the world, and at his peak in terms of age – is bizarre, and only leads to more rumours and hypotheses. The most popular of which is that Coach Andrea Stramaccioni no longer wants him at the club. It is not beyond the realms of possibility for that to be the case, but a number of factors do not quite fit.
Tactically, it has been difficult to work Sneijder into the team for some time. Numerous Coaches have had trouble finding a balance when Sneijder plays as a trequartista in a 4-3-1-2, as it leaves too many players contributing little defensively, and recreations of Jose Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1, with the Dutchman reprising his favoured role, have caused problems because they have been unable to convince the wide players to work in the way the Portuguese tactician convinced Samuel Eto’o and Goran Pandev.
Yet Stramaccioni’s 3-4-3-esque system, with Rodrigo Palacio and Antonio Cassano playing behind and generally around Diego Milito, appears to have two spots that Sneijder could fill without really affecting the balance of the team. Cassano is not known as a workhorse, and Palacio, although better in this regard, is hardly reaching Eto’o levels of defensive work and tracking. It seems strange to assert that the No 10 cannot fit in a system that is playing three forwards, two of whom have licence to roam, and that offer little coverage defensively.
The fact is nobody actually knows whether he can fit because he has not been given the chance. Inter first started a League game with a three-man defence against Chievo in September, coincidentally the game where Sneijder went off with injury and has not been seen in an Inter shirt since. So his chances in Stramaccioni’s new methodology have amounted to 26 minutes against the Verona outfit.
The idea that the team are worse off defensively is not backed up by numbers. Under Stramaccioni, Inter concede a goal every 67 minutes without Sneijder, compared to a goal every 61 minutes when Sneijder is on the pitch, a difference that is not large enough to warrant labelling him either way.
If Stramaccioni really believes he does not fit, then why not be decisive and make it clear he is for sale? If he genuinely does not want him, then leaving him out of squads, or on the bench, would send the message. He tried to claim that Sneijder’s absence has nothing to do with the contract situation, but it smacks of a Coach toeing the club line, especially given Cassano’s recent two game suspension.
This nonsense is designed to shovel the blame into the player’s camp – if he demands a transfer the club can always claim they wanted to keep him. It is no surprise that he has refused to sign the deal – no-one in his circumstances would. But now you have a situation where the club are determined to have him agree to reduced terms, and a player who will not even countenance the idea until he is back playing games.
There is no reason not to believe the official line, even if it is monstrously heavy-handed way of going about it, and a slightly flawed operation when your first attempt at implementing a structure is to reduce the wages of a star, as opposed to two 32+ year-old Argentines on more than €4m. But if the club are given a choice between keeping Sneijder on €6m a year or making cuts, a choice that it looks likely they will face, the latter will probably win out.
I don't think it's the 'wrong player'. Sneijder has practically had only 1 good year in his carreer..and in that year, there were many who had the season of their lives’. He is a fantastically talented player, but rather lazy, self-centered and to be honest, never been fundamental to our results. I’ve said this some time back but IMO he’s a nice cherry on the cake, not a good ingredient to get a better cake. Add to this that he’s been injured for about a whole season in these past 2 years…so for that wage (12m a year incl. taxes), he is the right player rather. Certainly there are others, but if you want to reduce your wages, you start from the highest paid man…and this happens to be Sneijder.
