Tough love. I'd have to agree to a certain point. Punish them, but not way over the top. If they don't learn when they are younger, they won't ever learn.
Inter 2 - 1 Siena D’Agostino 6 (S), Milito 42, pen 81 (I) Stadio Giuseppe Meazza
Diego Milito’s brace managed to overturn an early Siena goal, as Inter emerged winners at San Siro.
The Nerazzurri were still unbeaten under Andrea Stramaccioni, albeit after conceding seven goals in two games against Genoa and Cagliari. Here they welcomed Siena, who were fighting against relegation and fresh from a surprise win away to Atalanta. Douglas Maicon, Wesley Sneijder and Luc Castaignos were still out, but Julio Cesar and Lucio’s bans had expired. Ricky Alvarez returned from a long lay-off and went straight into the starting XI for an all-Argentine trident. The visitors missed Angelo and Emanuele Calaiò.
Siena took a shock lead after just six minutes, as Walter Samuel was caught in possession in the final third by Gaetano D’Agostino. It was a chaotic move, as Julio Cesar and the defenders did all they could to deny Mattia Destro and Franco Brienza, but D’Agostino eventually fired in on the rebound.
An Alvarez angled drive whistled past the far post and Diego Milito had timid penalty appeals for a tussle with Vitiello. Milito’s glancing header was off target and Samuel was booked for a tactical foul to stop Destro going on the counter, meaning he’ll be suspended against Udinese.
Esteban Cambiasso had the ball in the net on 23 minutes, but play had already been halted for Milito’s offside position – and foul on Gianluca Pegolo – in the build-up.
Milito wasted another great chance soon after, as he was sent totally clear by Joel Obi and Cristian Chivu, but fired straight at Pegolo.
At the other end, Brienza should’ve set up the unmarked Destro on the counter-attack, but instead went for goal himself and was stopped by Samuel. The defender hurt himself and requested a substitution, so Chivu moved to centre-back as Yuto Nagatomo came off the bench.
Milito equalised for Inter after an absolute howler. Pesoli’s attempted clearance from a corner turned into an assist for Milito to tap in from close range past a helpless Pegolo.
After the restart a fierce Alvarez snapshot dipped at the last moment, forcing Pegolo into a tough save on both that effort and Milito’s follow-up. Pesoli deflected a Mauro Zarate attempt over the bar, but Destro went on a mazy run down the right and eventually fired just over.
The referee pointed to the spot for a controversial penalty, as Nagatomo seemed to pull at Mannini first before he was wrestled down, but only the second foul was awarded. Milito smashed the penalty under the bar to put Inter in front for the first time.
Inter controlled the game in the final stages and Pegolo was sent off for dissent in stoppages.
Inter: Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Lucio, Samuel (Nagatomo 38), Chivu; Cambiasso, Stankovic, Obi (Poli 68); Alvarez (Pazzini 77), Milito, Zarate Siena: Pegolo; Vitiello (Contini 74), Terzi, Pesoli, Del Grosso; Mannini, Vergassola, Bolzoni (Gazzi 63), Brienza; D’Agostino (Gonzalez 62); Destro Ref: Romeo Sent off: Pegolo 93 (S)
Andrea Stramaccioni is prepared to alter his set-up to try to beat Udinese on Saturday night, as he admits Inter are ‘perfect victims’ for the Zebrette.
Francesco Guidolin’s side are looking for their third consecutive win over the Nerazzurri in this weekend’s meeting, one that also has added value with both teams still in contention to snatch the third and final Champions League qualification position.
In preparing for the game and looking to maintain his unbeaten start with the San Siro side, Stramaccioni has admitted he is open to try new things, so as not to lose on Saturday.
“Their overall ability is undeniable and they have achieved great things and have built a strong League standing at Friuli. It is going to be a difficult game for us, but we have known this for a while.
“The identity and the idea of the team must always be maintained, but in single games there can be variations and tricks.
“Udinese has features that can cause us a lot of harm. We do not want to abandon the ideas we have been working on in previous games, but certainly we will have to introduce some ploys to counter their strengths.
“For our features we may be the perfect victims for Udinese. We will try to take the game to them, even if we’ve only had two days to prepare.
“I hope to see an Inter side that can retain its identity whilst also adapting to the strengths of the opponent.”
The Nerazzurri will be without Walter Samuel, however, after he was ruled out for up to three weeks with an injury.
“He is an important player for Inter, one of the best defenders in the world. But, without him we found a balance on Wednesday [against Siena] and we will have to find one again in Udine.
“His absence is significant, but we will do well even if he won’t be playing for a few rounds.”
The 36-year-old, who was promoted to the position of Coach after winning the NextGen Series with the youth team, was asked about his reluctance to follow up on an initial promise to introduce some younger faces to the team.
“I have already spoken about the youngsters when I was with the primavera and I said that Inter had some interesting young players.
“However, the way Serie A is structured does not mean that those who do well at youth level can then do well at senior level, because the difference between the two competitions is too great.
“There are exceptions to the rule, but the gap exists. The primavera hardly provide the prototype that is ready to play in Serie A.
“The President has asked me to qualify for Europe and I will select young players if in my opinion they carry the same or greater value than an older player.
“It is all for the good of Inter, as the best team available will always play.”
Stramaccioni looked to offer some insight into speculation surrounding whether or not he will stay on in the role as Coach at the club beyond the end of the season.
“After the first hour and a half of conversation, before I signed, we made a pact that he asked me to win. It is a clause in the contract that the President of Inter requires of all his Coaches here for the next 100 years. It is normal.
“Moratti told me to win when I arrived, but not this game or that one. I am learning that in A, victory and defeat is separated by a matter of inches.
“But I do not know if winning from now until the end of the season means I will stay. To me, it doesn’t count.
“For now, I am interested in the trip to Udine. We are working well, we can expect a game against one of the toughest in Italy.”
a kid drop dead of a heart attack, and the football world, in Italy stops ,can you get a more patetic way of thinking ?no wander the all country is in the shit and i cannot see a way out ,neve ever.
Inter made a January move for Fredy Guarin after they asked the advice of Andre Villas-Boas – his former boss at Porto.
“I haven’t spoken to him yet, but if I am here at Inter then I owe him a lot,” the Colombian told O Jogo on Monday when asked about the recently sacked Chelsea tactician.
“I know that Inter asked him about me and he responded with some very important words.”
The 25-year-old joined the Nerazzurri on loan at the start of this year with an option to complete his move from Porto for €13.5m.
However, the Colombian arrived in Milan with an injury and he’s only made two appearances for the club so far.
“It’s really important for me to be here at a club like this,” the midfielder continued. “Inter are a great institution and I want to win a lot – just like I did at Porto.
“We won nine trophies in three years and I want to try and repeat that feat here in Italy.”
Milan and Inter will play their home games on a synthetic surface from next season onwards, reports La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The state of the San Siro pitch has been heavily criticised again this term, especially ahead of Milan’s Champions League ties against Arsenal and Barcelona.
The Spanish giants were so unhappy with the turf that they lodged an official complaint to UEFA about the condition of the pitch.
Milan responded to that action by admitting they had plans to install a hybrid playing surface with a synthetic base and natural grass on top.
Inter also later gave the green light to such an operation.
The Gazzetta today says that work on transforming the surface will begin in the middle of June and it should be ready for the Trofeo Berlusconi match between Milan and Juventus in August.
Ground staff at the Meazza have had difficulties looking after the turf ever since a third tier was added to the arena ahead of Italia ’90.
Mauro Zarate has found a new lease of life at Inter and thanks the new Coach. “Andrea Stramaccioni has faith in me and I believe we can finish third.”
The striker arrived on the last day of the summer transfer session on loan from Lazio, but struggled to make his mark under both Gian Piero Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri.
“Stramaccioni is giving me the chance to play and tells me to do what comes into my mind, because he believes in my qualities,” Zarate told Inter Channel.
“He asks the team to attack and all the forward-pushing players have to make the difference. For someone like me it is crucial to dribble and seek the one-on-one.
“Now we are closer to third place and must do our best in the next two games, as we want as many points as possible.
“They will be difficult matches, but they will allow us to understand if we can really achieve Champions League qualification or not.
“I am convinced it is possible and our heads are entirely focused on this objective.”
Italian media has been reporting of an interest for a Balotelli return to the base ... what are your views on this? i think mario will never mature and with him on the pitch you are in a constant danger of ending games with 10 players. He is a very good player, but I would think twice before bringing him back.
Your last part is true, however, the fact that (1) Man City seem fed up of him (and rightly so) and want to sell him (2) he seems to wanna go back to Italy and (3) the fact that not many clubs will want him due to his character, will all help in lowering his price. I'm putting my money that next season he will play in the san siro (which club we will have to see ... in case he signs for Milan I'll put my money on a fight between ibra and balo during a training session).
I don't think Balotelli will ever come back to us. Milan want him and I think he is a Milanista anyway. I'd only take him back if it was on a free. We simply don't have the money to spend players that might come good in the future (maturity wise). Also, if Jose couldn't get through to him, want chances are any of our future managers will?
Inter scraped a point away to Fiorentina thanks to Julio Cesar, who parried Adem Ljajic’s penalty.
This was a match between two of the biggest disappointments of the campaign, as the Nerazzurri faced a fight to qualify for Europe, while the Viola were only three points clear of the relegation zone. Wesley Sneijder was available for the first time since Andrea Stramaccioni took over, but was on the bench for an audacious 4-2-3-1 formation with four strikers. Douglas Maicon also returned, though Walter Samuel and Luc Castaignos missed out. Fiorentina had to completely revamp their attack, as Amauri’s ban and injuries to Stevan Jovetic, Juan Manuel Vargas and Per Kroldrup meant only two forwards were available. Riccardo Montolivo was also carrying an injury.
Delio Rossi also had a disastrous record against Inter of one win, five draws and 18 defeats in his career. The last Fiorentina victory in this fixture was in 2006.
Houssine Kharja could’ve put the Viola in front after 70 seconds, but horribly fired well wide with only Julio Cesar to beat. At the other end Artur Boruc took the sting out of a Diego Forlan snapshot and another attempt from the Uruguayan was charged down.
Mauro Zarate went on the counter for a daisy-cutter that skimmed the base of the near post, though Boruc appeared to have it covered. Alessio Cerci also went on a mazy run to fire wide from eight yards and Ricky Alvarez did well to charge down another of his counter-attacks.
Matija Nastasic got in the way of a Forlan effort and as the move continued Lucio was jeered for a dive on the edge of the area. A row broke out between Milito and Nastasic with both booked before half-time.
Yuto Nagatomo replaced captain Javier Zanetti for the second half due to a thigh problem. Zarate fired just over the bar and Sneijder made his comeback in place of Forlan.
Cesare Natali went close when a free kick was whipped in from the left by Ljajic, but Lucio anticipated his volley at the back post.
Maicon and Milito combined with a give-and-go, but the Brazilian had his shot charged down.
The breakthrough seemed to come on 67 minutes when Andrea Lazzari burst into the box on a Kharja reverse ball to be brought down by Julio Cesar for a penalty. Delio Rossi wanted a red card, but his player was going wide, so it was not considered a clear scoring opportunity. Ljajic stepped up and saw his weak spot-kick saved by Julio Cesar, who guessed the right angle and turned it round the base of the near post.
Ljajic was removed soon after for another Fiorentina youngster, Acosty, who was booked with practically his first touch for a foul on Lucio.
Cerci was halted for an incorrect offside flag when clear on goal practically from the centre-circle. Manuel Pasqual was booked for dissent and will be suspended for Wednesday’s trip to Roma.
Fiorentina again went extremely close to a winner on 78 minutes, as a corner found Nastasic unmarked, but his looping finish was just over the bar with Julio Cesar rooted to the spot.
Inter were set to introduce Giampaolo Pazzini, but Cristian Chivu picked up an injury, so Andrea Ranocchia had to be the final substitute instead.
Boruc was at full stretch to get a hand to Zarate’s daisy-cutter, stopping it from going into the near bottom corner of the net. Cerci tumbled after contact with Ranocchia, but was only booked for simulation as they went shoulder to shoulder.
Nagatomo hit the side-netting and Milito went for goal with a turn and strike that Boruc plucked out of the air rather than rolling across for Zarate. Inter turned up the pressure and a cross was marginally too high for Sneijder’s head, although he had wandered offside anyway.
Esteban Cambiasso turned on the edge of the six-yard box from a corner to have his effort charged down, while Sneijder blasted over.
Inter fought back from an early Udinese opener to conquer the Stadio Friuli with Wesley Sneijder’s brace and stay in the Champions League race.
The Friulani had been running out of steam in recent weeks with just two wins in the last 11 rounds, but were still only three points adrift of Champions League qualifying spots. Mauricio Isla, Andrea Coda and the suspended Gelson Fernandes missed out. Inter were still unbeaten under Andrea Stramaccioni, but their chances of finishing in the top three were almost nullified. Javier Zanetti, Diego Forlan, Angelo Palombo, Walter Samuel, Cristian Chivu and Luc Castaignos were all sidelined. Wesley Sneijder got his first start since Stramaccioni took charge.
After just six minutes Udinese took the lead, as a spectacular Antonio Di Natale rabona (crossing his legs and hitting the ball with the back foot) sparked a promising move, then Pablo Armero surprised Douglas Maicon to set up Danilo for a screamer in off the inside of the near post from the edge of the box. It was the defender’s debut Serie A goal.
The Friulani went close to a second, as Dusan Basta’s cross was knocked on by Antonio Floro Flores for Asamoah to drill just wide.
Inter drew level in bizarre circumstances with Sneijder, who hit a seemingly simple daisy-cutter from the outside corner of the area, but it bobbled just in front of Samir Handanovic and squirmed past his outstretched hand. It was a howler from the Udinese goalkeeper.
Giampiero Pinzi and Fredy Guarin drilled off target from distance, as the two teams settled down a little better in defence after that chaotic start. Floro Flores tested Julio Cesar, but Inter turned the game around completely.
Diego Milito ran into the box and drew away two defenders, but smartly provided an inspired reverse pass for the unmarked Sneijder to delicately chip the on-rushing Handanovic.
Inter added a third goal with a classic counter-attack after Floro Flores had skipped past Lucio. Ricky Alvarez again sparked the move from the centre-circle and turned Danilo inside out for an angled drive that beat Handanovic and went in off the inside of the far post.
Udinese had penalty appeals for a Yuto Nagatomo handling offence on Dusan Basta’s cross, but the referee awarded a corner as his arm was across his chest. Floro Flores fired over from distance and a Sneijder free kick was over the bar at the end of a sparkling first half.
Floro Flores burst past Lucio at the dawn of the second half, but fell between the Brazilian and Nagatomo. Both Kwadwo Asamoah and Di Natale stung Julio Cesar’s palms as Udinese poured forward.
It left space for Inter on the counter and Maicon tested Handanovic after combining with Guarin, while Sneijder’s daisy-cutter skimmed the woodwork.
Udinese pushed hard with Gabriel Torje joining the attack, but Floro Flores forced a very tricky save out of Julio Cesar and Mehdi Benatia nodded over from a corner.
There was a nasty accidental collision in the final minute when Dejan Stankovic and Floro Flores clashed in midfield, the Inter man getting a kick to the ribcage and the Friulano falling heavily on to his shoulder.
