Muntari set for Inter stay

Sulley Muntari’s proposed move from Inter to Turkish giants Galatasaray seems to have collapsed.

The midfielder was expected to join the club before the transfer window closed in Turkey later today.

However, it appears that Galatasaray have now pulled out of the race to sign the Ghana international.

The 27-year-old joined the Nerazzurri in the summer of 2008 at the request of then boss Jose Mourinho.

The former Portsmouth man has struggled for regular action at San Siro and spent the last six months of the 2010-11 campaign on loan at Sunderland.

He returned to Italy in the summer after the English club opted against signing him outright from the Beneamata.

Chivu to miss Palermo clash

Cristian Chivu is expected to miss Inter’s trip to Palermo after spraining his ankle during training today.

The Romanian international limped off early in the session with a sprained left ankle, though more tests are required to ascertain the extent of the damage.

It is unlikely Chivu can recover in time for Sunday night’s Serie A opener against Palermo.

Ivan Cordoba, Douglas Maicon, Andrea Poli and Emiliano Viviano are also out due to injuries.

Thiago Motta is a major doubt after picking up a thigh problem during Italy’s 1-0 win over Slovenia on Tuesday.

Inter announced that youth academy product Paolo Tornaghi, a goalkeeper who was on loan at Como, has been integrated into the senior squad.

The first two in the list are always injured, no big surprise there. If not injured, they are out of shape and in poor form.

It will be interesting to see what formation Gasperini starts with. Let's say Stankovic is not available, I would go with Cesar, Samuel, Lucio, Rannochia, Jonathan, Nagatomo, Cambiasso, Zanetti, Sneijder, Milito and Forlan.

I think you have it right there Frank. Though if Stankovic is available, I wouldn't be surprised to see Zanetti as part of the 3-men-defence. I think we might see Obi too at some point.

Reports are suggesting that Sneijder will be benched for today's match against Palermo...That's quite shocking..Also it seems like Zanetti will start as left defender in our 3 men defence..but this is less shocking. We all know that Zanetti always manages to find a space in the first 11, no matter what..

Gasp: 'If Sneijder doesn't play...'

Gian Piero Gasperini admits Wesley Sneijder could be dropped against Palermo. “I see him as a forward. If he doesn’t play, Inter won’t collapse.”

Much has been said over the summer about Sneijder’s tactical allocation in the 4-3-3 system, whether as a deeper-lying midfielder or part of the trident up front.

“I see Sneijder as a forward,” confirmed Gasperini in today’s Press conference. “He is one of the most important players in the world right now and I hope he can have an exceptional campaign.

“We do have a large squad and I consider Sneijder to be a forward, although obviously he can be used in different roles when needed. We have numerous options and this is why I have great faith in this team.”

It is reported the Dutchman will be dropped for Sunday night’s trip to Palermo, as he’ll then take cup-tied Diego Forlan’s place in the Champions League.

“I made a bet with Wesley. Last season he scored four goals in 25 games, while I am convinced he’ll have more. The position isn’t a problem, as we have a basic structure and can place many variations upon it. This controversy is stirred up by the media, as it’s not as if Inter will collapse if Sneijder doesn’t play.”

The experiment of fielding the Manchester United target in midfield appears to have been abandoned, as on transfer deadline day Inter signed Forlan and Mauro Zarate.

“Forlan has surprised us beyond all expectations,” continued Gasperini. “It was a shock not having him in Europe, but we would’ve signed him even if we’d known he was cup-tied.

“As for the three-man defence, it is what always gave me good results. I’d like for us to be allowed to play before we are criticised and ostracised for our tactics.

“President Massimo Moratti has always supported my decisions and there is absolutely no problem. I noticed at Inter that there is always controversy stirred up around everything. We need to play and get the chance to prove ourselves.”

Lots of work to do ... if we are to play with a 3 man defence, we need another mf. Cambiasso is very good tactically but nowadays he is very slow. It was not by chance that every time we lost the ball, Palermo created a counter attack. Individually I think all players were pretty decent apart from Zarate and Cesar (wrong positioning on the last 2 goals - he admitted himself in after match comments). Looking forward to the next two matches ... but I think we won't see too much good. When you change the system of play so radically you need more time for players to get used to it. Thank God we've won more than a dozen trophies in the last 5 seasons so the wait will be less painful.
