I know, Frank, but, still, if someone comes in with a massively inflated offer it's stupid to look a gift horse in the mouth, right? I know there are issues of timing here - had the offer come six weeks ago it might have been a different proposition. Still, Maicon's real value must be about 10 mil, no? And you could surely get a pretty solid replacement for him for that, making the other 20 mil a gift. Zaccardo, maybe? Oh, of course he's Italian, though. No, I know what you say is right - Maicon is settled and knows the way the team plays and lord knows Inter could use a bit of stability for once. Why disturb a relatively settled ship for the sake of a few euros here or there? Still, it was a truly ridiculous offer and one anyone interested in making sensible business decisions would have been inclined to accept.

Seriously, though, of all positions, fullbacks tend to be the most inappropriately rated. What you need is a guy who has pace, power, stamina, and enough technical quality. In a team which is playing well, a solid fullback can look a world-beater because he can get forward a lot, he's relatively rarely under the cosh defensively, and, most importantly, when he does get forward it's on an overlapping run which means he very often receives the ball in a bit of space which means he doesn't need to produce anything too technically sizzling to get a decent ball into the box. Alternatively, in a team which is struggling, the same fullback will look pretty average - unable to get forward, unable to get beyond his winger into a bit of space, and as defensively shaky as the rest of the side. Players like Roberto Carlos and Cafu are a step up because they had such exceptional pace that they could get themselves out of trouble with it. Compare someone like Gary Neville - an outstandingly competent fullback, but hardly a player you'd get excited about. So Maicon looks great in an Inter side on top - he has enough pace, enough power, is technically not bad; but in none of this is he exceptional. How much praise did Lauren get while at Arsenal? Or Ashley Cole? And how good do Clichy and Sagna look at times now? If you played anyone with a bit of athleticism and a nice touch at right-back in that Inter side last season he'd have impressed.

From a truly business perspective that's a very valid point......But moratti has never been like that with inter and will never be......He will never be a moggi or gillani....He is a person who puts his heart ahead of his brain......That has it's advantages and disadvantages but it is always going to be like that as long as moratti is around.....

Alternatively, one needs only look at players like Cufre or Silvestre or Wes Brown for ManUre. Or even Lima under Capello for us on the left-wing, who was classic fullback style in the sense that his movement was metronomic and his technique just a whisker short of what one might expect from a creative winger. Technically, those four players are pretty bloody terrible - among the worst I've seen in players playing at a pretty high level. And yet all four were able to do a job or almost able to do a job. Maicon is a better player than those four, of course, but I trust you can see that that's not desperately high praise.

Inter: Moratti al Festival di Venezia per il film su Facchetti

L'Inter, rappresentata dal presidente Massimo Moratti, saranno al Festival del cinema di Venezia per la presentazione de "Il Capitano dei capitani", documentario su Giacinto Facchetti, storico capitano, nonchè presidente dell'Inter, scomparso lo scorso autunno. Con Moratti ci sarà la famiglia di Facchetti, e i figli Gianfelice e Barbara, assieme ad Alberto D'Onofrio, autore del documentario, e a Moratti, ricorderanno la figura del capitano neroazzurro.

Recoba-Torino ormai ci siamo

Il Chino ha già detto sì a Novellino, l'operazione in dirittura d'arrivo
Alvaro Recoba è di nuovo ad un passo dal Torino. La sua partenza dall'Inter è praticamente certa, dopo che Adriano ha fatto chiaramente capire, tramite il suo procuratore Gilmar Veloz, che non se ne andrà via da Milano in prestito. Di fatto è il via libera per la cessione del Chino, che già considera chiusa la sua esperienza in nerazzurro.
Cairo è entusiasta dell'ipotesi, Novellino è il primo ispiratore dell'operazione, resta come ultimo problema l'ingaggio dell'uruguaiano, che ha un contratto molto alto, quasi 2,5 milioni di euro, fino a giugno 2008. Per chiudere l'affare serve che Moratti dia una mano al Torino, poi a fine stagione Cairo e Recoba si metteranno ad un tavolo per decide il futuro.
Anche a livello tattico, non ci sarebbero ormai più perplessità. La convivenza tra Rosina e Recoba è infatti possibile, visto che il talento granata può giocare come esterno sinistro e il Chino anche come seconda punta al fianco di Ventola o Bjelanovic. Recoba in realtà ha già detto sì a Novellino, l'allenatore con cui a Venezia segnò 11 gol pesantissimi in 19 gare nel '99-'2000, anche perchè non ha nessuna intenzione, per rispetto di Moratti, di andare in una squadra concorrente all'Inter come la Juventus o Milan. E anche il Napoli in questo momento ha pochissime chanches. Il Torino è vicinissimo al grande colpo di mercato. Le prossime ore saranno decisive.
