Leonardo: I'd sack myself

Inter boss Leonardo admits that he is fortunate not to be sacked after Tuesday's defeat to Schalke in the Champions League.

The holders lost 5-2 at home to the Bundesliga outfit just three days after suffering a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Milan in a potentially title-deciding derby.

“If I had been a director, I probably would have been less kind than the President,” Leonardo said.

“At times thinking like a director I would sack myself: but I don't feel at risk because it's not part of who I am. I am not afraid of losing my place. If it happens, it happens. But I am sure that we can take the situation in hand again.

“The resources to do it aren't lacking. For example, Diego Milito was a hero on his return: he was out for a long time. We need results.

“The recent defeats have been heavy even if mathematically we are still in the fight. But they have been faced in a very lucid manner. Now we must try to find a solution as quickly as possible, but what has happened has happened and we are looking forward.

“I have also met the President and it was a calm meeting. We spoke about the things that aren't working. It was positive for the both of us to start again.”

Inter fans back the team
Inter's Curva Nord has responded to Javier Zanetti's calls to see through the media criticism and back the team for the remainder of the season.

Inter have come under immense criticism after they suffered heavy back-to-back defeats to Milan and Schalke.

Thursday's La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that it's the end of a cycle at Inter and suggested that Leonardo and several first team players be replaced.

Last night, Zanetti told the 'real Inter fans' to ignore the media backlash and make their own minds up about the situation.

A statement released on the behalf of the Curva Nord indicates that they have heeded the captain's words.

“The responsibility of the defeats to Milan and Schalke must be shared between the club, the Coach and the players, but we will be with Inter until death does us part.

“We only ask that the players finish the season like men and fight until the last second in Germany. Then we'll see how it ends.

“This team has got us used to great achievements. We believe. We want you to believe too.”

Moratti: Schalke tie impossible

President Massimo Moratti has urged his Inter players to believe in Wednesday’s “impossible” Schalke mission.

The Nerazzurri need to score at least four goals without conceding in Germany, after their 5-2 home defeat, in order to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

“We need to stay concentrated,” the Inter chief said outside of his offices in Milan on Monday evening.

“We need to try to achieve something that seems impossible, even if the impossibility makes this tie fascinating.

“We’ll take things a day at a time in the Champions League and in Serie A and then see what happens in both.”

Nerazzurri boss Leonardo has surprised many by including Walter Samuel in the squad, just 153 days after he seriously damaged knee ligaments.

“I don’t think that he’ll play,” added Moratti. “We’ve forgotten that we might have been something different if he had been playing in these months. His presence in the team is fundamental.

We all knew this was coming. At least we did not lose conceding five goals again.

We need to do some rebuilding, more so if we are going to continue with Leonardo and his brand of football. We need at least one player in every department. A central defender who has pace is a must if we are going to play with this high line. In midfield I would like Sahin from Dortmund, he is destined to be a great player. In attack, Sanchez to give us some much needed pace and trickery.

More importantly we should be ready to sell if an offer comes for Cesar, Maicon, Pandev or probably even Milito for that matter. Don't extend Chivu's contract and its time to let go of some older players like Cordoba even though they have been great servants for the club.

Yeh I was hoping that we would at least win the match instead we had increased the deficit.
Rebuilding is a must, in saying that we have Leo under contract until the end of next season. If we are going to keep him we need to buy players that would suit his style. We can't buy if we plan on sacking him half way through next season like we did with Rafa. If we do rid of Leo, who do we go for? Spaletti?
As you said, Cesar, Maicon, Milito and Cordoba need to be sold, only if we can get a respectable amount of euros for them. We can probably throw Cordoba and Milito in for a deal with say Sanchez or Sahin. Pandev needs to stay because doesn't he count as one of our home grown players for the Champions League or something like that?
In saying all this, I'm worried we will lose Sneijder to Manure. Can we afford to lose Sneijder, Maicon, Milito and Cesar in one window?
