Benitez claims he proved his worth at Inter by wininng trophies without resources on the transfer market... By Salvatore Landolina
Rafael Benitez has taken another dig at Inter, claiming they never supplied him with the players he wanted.
The coach left the club in December after a poor campaign in Serie A, but he was able to capture the World Club Cup with what he claims were limited resources after joining the club from Liverfekkin'wankscum last summer.
"When I was at Inter they did not buy anyone. After I left five or six players arrived... still I was able to win two trophies, one of which was the Club World Cup which is what the club wanted the most," he told La Informacion.
"All in all though it seems a positive period."
Leonardo replaced Benitez in the new year, and was followed by high profile purchases like Giampaolo Pazzini.
Inter are currently second in Serie A, two points behind Milan heading into tonight's derby della Madoninna.
Leonardo insists the 3-0 defeat is not a Scudetto surrender, “but admittedly five points are a lot. I respect the Milan fans.” The Nerazzurri had the opportunity to go top of the table tonight, but were beaten 3-0 by rivals and Serie A leaders Milan.
“Is this a surrender for the Scudetto? No, certainly not that, but admittedly five points are a lot with only seven games to go,” said the Coach.
“At the end of the first half we had some good chances, then five minutes after the break Cristian Chivu was sent off and that affected our ability to fight back.”
Alexandre Pato scored a brace in this game, including the opener after just 47 seconds, before Antonio Cassano’s late penalty.
“If you concede after one minute, then it is going to make it very difficult and change all your plans. We didn’t do enough tonight and Milan made it hard for us.
“In the second half, with a man down, it got even harder. We struggled a lot in attack and didn’t move enough off the ball, so ran into a lot of problems trying to create chances.
“Am I surprised by Pato’s performance? No, I know him very well.”
Leonardo was the Coach of Milan last season and spent 13 years there as player, talent scout – signing Pato – and tactician.
This was his first game against the Rossoneri and the crowd held up a giant banner depicting The Last Supper with Leo as Judas.
“I respect the Milan fans. I know what I experienced with them and I am proud of everything I am experiencing now. There is nothing to analyse.
“I saw and heard the welcome I was given here, but I respect everyone.”
Andrea Ranocchia maintains “the title race is not over yet” despite Inter’s 3-0 defeat in the Milan derby. “The whole game changed with that opening goal,” he said of Alexandre Pato’s strike after just 47 seconds.
“We got back on our feet and went close to an equaliser, but couldn’t take our chances. Unfortunately, that’s the way it went.
“Were Milan hungrier for the win? I don’t think so, as we did react after that initial goal. If Samuel Eto’o had scored on the stroke of half-time, the match would’ve changed all over again, but this is football.”
Inter are now five points adrift of the leaders but, as it’s head-to-head confrontations that counts in Serie A rather than goal difference, it is ‘virtually’ a six-point gap.
“The title race is not over yet and the season remains open,” insisted Ranocchia.
“There are another seven rounds to go and we’ll battle to the very end. A team like Inter cannot abandon the Scudetto so soon.”
Inter are hoping to net Alexis Sanchez from Udinese in the summer in a deal that won’t see them hand over more than €15m in cash.
The Chilean sensation will be one of Europe’s most wanted at the end of the season and it is no secret that Inter are keen.
Nerazzurri market chief Marco Branca has already held exploratory negotiations with the Udine outfit and he’s working on a table to offer.
According to reports in the peninsula, Inter are trying to formulate a bid which will comprise of enough quality players to keep the cash aspect of the deal low.
Sanchez is reputedly valued at around €30m by the Bianconeri, but the European champions are hoping to only pay up to half that amount in money.
They hope to make up the deficit by offering a number of players with Philippe Coutinho said to be liked by Udinese boss Francesco Guidolin.
Inter could also offer a selection of promising youngsters, with Denis Alibec, Luca Caldirola and Lorenzo Crisetig possible pawns in the deal.
Diego Milito insists that his Inter side are now just focused on tomorrow’s game against Schalke following the 3-0 derby defeat to Milan.
The Nerazzurri return to action at San Siro on Tuesday when they face the Bundesliga outfit in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
“We want to play a great game tomorrow and win,” said the Argentine striker. “We’ll look to be protagonists, as always, especially after a loss.
“The squad has a great desire to put in a great performance. However, we don’t have to prove anything to anyone.
“The atmosphere is good within the camp, we really want to do well in the tie and reach the next stage. Desire and serenity is what is taking us forward.”
Inter were blessed with what looks like a favourable draw on paper, but the South American insists that their German opponents shouldn’t be undervalued.
“Schalke are a strong side,” he added. “We respect them and they’ll be difficult to face. You don’t get to the last eight of the Champions League by chance.”
Milito has been declared fit for the game after recent injury problems, but he’s hoping to make a contribution to the cause.
“It has been a difficult year for me,” said last term’s super striker. “I’ve had many injuries to deal with, but there are two months left for me to transform my anger into positive energy.
“However, it doesn’t matter if I score or not. The important thing is that Inter reach the Final of the Champions League at Wembley.”
Good luck to Inter tonight. I hope you lads can bounce back from the Derby defeat and get a result tonight and go on to represent Serie A in the last four. Is Milito defo gonna start, yeh, and in place of Pandev I'd imagine?
What was your formation against Milan, a 4-2-3-1, with both Eto and Pandev out wide and Pazzini in the centre? That formation looks a little better i think and suits Eto and Snjeider more, plus the return of Milito, if fully fit, will help them too.
Well what the fook was that? Talk about a capitulation. What is wrong with Inter, that performance was just scandalous. The attitude of the players was appalling, they just didn't want to know.
