Italian Media Praise AC Milan Coach Leonardo For Standing Up To Silvio Berlusconi

AC Milan coach Leonardo was recently defiant in the face of criticism from club supremo Silvio Berlusconi and the Italian media have backed the Brazilian tactician.

Berlusconi had suggested that Leonardo was hindering the team by not allowing them to play. However, the 40-year-old responded that the president can tell him to leave at any time.

La Repubblica journalist Massimo Mauro suggested that the Rossoneri tactician is worthy of his own political party, "PDL, bench of freedom. Bravo Leonardo for your personality and a lesson in dignity."

Meanwhile, Sky believes that Berlusconi should look in the mirror before judging Leonardo, claiming that he has not done enough to regenerate the squad over the past few seasons.

"[Leonardo] is the only one of the prime minister's entourage, from politics to sport, who has the courage to respond in kind. Before launching accusations towards Leonardo for the lack of results, perhaps [Berlusconi] should compare their purchases with the rest of the league - then he will find all the answers."

Leonardo has warned his AC Milan side to expect Fiorentina to rise to the occasion when they meet in their rearranged Serie A clash on Wednesday. The original fixture at Stadio Artemio Franchi between the two sides was snowed off in December and since then Fiorentina have struggled for form.

But the Viola claimed a first victory since January 10 when they beat Livorno 2-1 on Saturday and Leonardo believes the home side would love nothing better than to derail his side's tilt at the league title.

Leonardo told Gazzetta dello Sport: "Fiorentina always play their best when playing in big situations and they have done very well in the Champions League. I expect Fiorentina to excel in the big games." But the Brazilian conceded it is better "to face Fiorentina now than in December", when Cesare Prandelli's side were on top form.

Leonardo also feels his team are back in with a chance of securing the title following city rivals Inter's recent run of indifferent form, but admits Jose Mourinho's side are still the favourites.

"Inter's three draws reopen the championship," he said. "But I think it is especially difficult for all to close the championship gap. "Inter is the team best equipped, as demonstrated by the fact that their bad spell saw them draw but suffer no defeats."

Milan are set to keep Christian Abbiati in goal ahead of Dida after he saved a penalty in the 2-1 win at Bari, with Marco Borriello set to partner Alexandre Pato and Ronaldinho in attack after scoring the opener having missed two games through injury. Fiorentina, who recently received the Tuscany region's Pegasus Sports 2010 award, will hope to reignite their challenge for European qualification following their weekend win, but Prandelli has warned his side they face a tough opponent.

"We have to put in the same effort we did against Livorno," he said. "Milan are playing really well and they showed this against Bari. "We know it will be a chance for them to reach second place and for us it's a chance to keep on dreaming."

Prandelli has also highlighted Milan's Brazil striker Pato as the main threat his side will need to watch. "He is an unpredictable player and we must pay attention, especially when we have the ball," he added.

The home side will be able to call on captain Ricardo Montolivo, who returns from suspension, with fellow midfielder Juan Manuel Vargas hoping to be fit as he struggles to overcome an ankle problem after the weekend's victory. Per Kroldrup is also available as he returns from a ban but the Denmark international may not force his way back into the side after some poor recent performances.
