Earlier in the season - a few weeks ago - Ranieri said he'd sat down with the three CBs and explained to them that none of them was a titolare and none a reserve - rather, that they were all at exactly the same level in his eyes. This is what Giacomo is referring to. Clearly this wasn't the way Ranieri saw things last season and no doubt Mexes doesn't trust him not to revert to last year's hierarchy.

Mexes started every CL GS game for which he was available, while Juan sat on the bench in each of those games.

The fact is that if one of them is sold, then we will need a replacement of equal quality to the outgoing player, what with CD comprising 2 positions.

I know it... and it will break my heart if Mexes leaves! I know it's corny, this is the way modern football is but I just think Mexes has become an integral part of this team. He's French but he has become Roman. He went through a bad patch but he is back and he is a beast. Very few non-Roman players have his passion and he wears it on his sleeve. If he goes I won't be happy.

This is just my opinion but Mexes is a better defender then Burdisso will ever be. He should start next to Juan. Maybe Burdisso instead of Cassetti. Ah well, Rosella pleading with Unicredit to renew Mexes' contract.

What Fonz's pre-edited post essentially asked was what do you make of the fact that every report in the build up to the Milan game suggested that had Cassetti been fit Mexes would have been playing alongside Juan and Burdisso would have been on the bench.

Mexes should be preferred to Burdisso every week because he is by far the better player. Perhaps Ranieri realises that now. Nevertheless, we are still going to lose Mexes because of his belief that he is essentially a back at Roma.

Emotions aside, what sense does it make for Mexes to leave cheaply in January when we'll need to pay far more for an equivalent replacement? Mexes > Burdisso. He's back in great form this season, and we need to have 3 quality CBs, especially as one of them is somewhat injury prone (at least after international breaks), and there are inevitable suspensions along the way with one or the other of the other two.
