This is for Edzo. I know he and I would welcome this move.
Riise urges 'fantastic' Irish stopper to join Roma By Ruaidhri O'Connor Wednesday November 17 2010
JOHN Arne Riise would welcome the prospect of Shay Given joining him at Roma should the Ireland goalkeeper move in January.
Having played second fiddle to Joe Hart at Manchester City, the Donegal man has been linked with a transfer to Italy and Riise's Roma are believed to have made enquiries about the stopper in September.
Riise left Liverfekkin'wankscum for a move to Italy in 2008, and the Norway left-back can vouch for the tough elements of changing countries -- but he reckons it is worth it in the end. And in the event that Given does join him at the Stadio Olimpico, Riise has offered to help the Irishman settle in the Italian capital.
"I read about Shay Given maybe coming to Roma. I have heard some rumours," Riise said at Norway's Dublin base yesterday. "Given is a fantastic goalkeeper. For him to be on the bench must be quite frustrating because he's more than good enough for a lot of teams.
"I think it would be good for him to get a move and first-team football and, if he comes to Italy, he would be more than welcome.
"It is a shame that he's not playing because to be a sub at his standard is quite abnormal. If he wants to come to Italy and Roma want him, he would be more than welcome. I will take care of him."

I don't think I'd like to spend Christmas in Rome, Carlo. Not that I wouldn't enjoy it, not at all, but for me Christmas is all about being at home with family and doing nothing but relaxing and getting sloshed. I've been to Rome twice before in November ('05 v Fiorentina and '08 also v Fiorentina) and I think its a lovely time to visit the city. Most of the annoying Americans have gone home and the weather is not quite what the tourists expect, while still perfect for wandering the streets. Udinese in the early Saturday kick-off (the same time we play the Kiwi's, Tom) should be a good match too and we're meeting up with some friends who live over there now to go the game. It'll be my first time in the Curva Sud too, so keep an eye out for the Irish Roma Clan's flags.
Indeed, Jeff, I read that interview with Riise in the paper this morning. Kind words from him toward Given, although I wonder how much Julio Sergio would appreciate them if he got wind of them. It would still be a great move for us, though, and he would be a big step up in class from what we have nwo. We could sell Doni to raise the funds for it, although the problem, naturally, remains the high figures involved, and even if we were to get him on loan he is on a €80,000-per-week salary so Citeh would still have to pay some part of that. But it'd be a great move.
Spalletti disappointed in Totti – Wednesday 17 November, 2010
Zenit St. Petersburg Coach Luciano Spalletti has thanked Francesco Totti for congratulating him on winning the Russian League, but then hit back at the Roma captain. Spalletti is still aggrieved at some of the hurtful things Totti said when he resigned after four very successful years in charge of Roma last September.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Spalletti said: “I thank Totti again for the compliments, but I would have preferred it if he had said something more when I left. But I thank him all the same for the compliments.”
The 51-year-old then distanced himself from reports linking him with the Inter job. “I have never been contacted by Inter. I have a contract here. I will continue to be Zenit's Coach until they sack me or a new situation develops.
“There were never any doubts [that Massimo Moratti would show his full confidence in Benitez]. Moratti is a serious person. At this present moment in the season the team has paid dearly for a series of injuries. Moratti is not the kind of person who turns his back on you after two months.”
A caldo è difficile valutare. Ha avuto fitta forte."
MRI for De Rossi tomorrow. Stay tuned ...
“I won things with that shirt and I know what it means. In no other city does a victory mean as much as in Rome."
I'm a bit pushed for time to properly check out the date on this next piece and I think the reference of "tomorrow" means today, Thursday Nov 18.
For a few days now, Il Romanista has been telling us of plans to release a 12 page exclusive dedicated to Claudio Ranieri. It should make interesting reading. In the meantime, some info has been leaked from it by tifosidellaroma.com
Our mister says, "I am a Roma fan and who more than myself wants to win? The past year we finished second, I want to improve." Claudio Ranieri will speak of that and other matters in this exclusive tomorrow. It is to be a special edition with 12 pages dedicated to him. He also added: "We have all the ingredients to have (make) a good championship. Last year we had 82 points, maybe this year we can win with less."
On the renewal of his contract il mister said: "It's not a question that should be put to me, it is a matter of corporate strategy. However let me be the coach for a moment, that is to think not of a company's assets but of the players, and I think about people like Ménez, Greco, De Rossi, and not only them. I am inclined to work well. I prefer the possibility of choice but if there is not then I choose to be patient. I never cried in my life. If the renewal doesn't happen then I will start again from scratch."
On Jeremy Ménez he said: "I think he is the best young player in the Italian championship. He just needs to learn good determination, to measure out well the forces at work. He is a player who can enchant the fans!"
Ranieri revealed also an anecdote from his time with Chelsea: "Abramovich had just just arrived and wanted me to get Totti, but I told him immediately, "that is not possible!"
Forza Roma reminds us that it's not only Ranieri and Mexes whose contracts expire in June. There are Cassetti, Loria, Antunes and Perrotta to be considered...a lot of meat to the fire, as they put it! Our new management's stance on Cassetti and Perrotta for example may be different from our present one...
Lupa, I was so excited during the Italia v Romania match that I "dozed off" not once but several times...and I missed the incident which involved the De Rossi injury. The Magnetic Resonance scan today of his pubic area will, for his sake I hope, reveal no serious damage!
Ed, I'm sure you would plan to spend Christmas with your family. My circumstances being different from yours, depend only on my business arrangements. At this busy time it's not a prudent move to leave others to run things. But I won't always be tied, and then I will have my chance to catch up on what I have been missing! btw, I noticed Bruno Conti made a recent comment on Spalletti where he said that a return to Roma would be..."very difficult!"
Reports of players on international duty yesterday:
De Rossi's injury as first feared, thank feck. Scan results give are good and there's no lesions damage in his tendon and he's already begun his rehabilitation. Will miss Saturdays game (feck) and likely to miss the Bayern match next week too.
Burdisso played 90 minutes in Argentina's 1-0 of Brazil. None of our Brazilian contingent were playing (Cicinho was being held in reserve)
Mexes played the first-half for France v england, was taken off as he's still suffering from a slight calf injury. I watched it and he played very well and commanded the French backline. Laurent Blanc as the 'hinge' (as in key part) of his defence.
Riise played a good 90 minutes in Norway's 2-1 away win to some great but unfortunate nation.
D'Alessandro (on loan at Bari), Crescenzi (Crotone) and Brosco (Triestina) all played in the Azzurrini's 2-1 win over Turkey.
Ed, I think Lupa was being coy when she reported the De Rossi groin injury. There's no-one going to tell me she didn't know what was involved even though she didn't give details! I read Danino saying he had never felt such strong pain...I'm not surprised. Getting your "crown jewels" bashed can't be funny, except perhaps to some who are watching!
btw, there was more pleasure to be had watching Ciro Ferrara's Azzurrini yesterday than in Prandelli's awful Austrian experience...and it didn't bother me one bit that Leo Messi stuck it right up Brasil in the 91'st minute. If any of our Brazilians are on a downer over that, then they will just have to deal with it!

Further to this 12 page epic on Signor Claudio being put together by Il Romanista. It still hasn't been released though they are saying later today. It's supposed to include a lot of fans' questions, apart from anecdotes and his own personal thoughts. In truth, I think we will do very well to even get around three pages of worthwhile info. That's what I meant when I said "interesting." I can honestly say I will take no pleasure from reading what I am certain will include a load of "woffle" designed just to please certain fans, and no, I will not provide translations unless there really is something worthwhile there!
I'm off to Rome early in the morning lads, goin over for the Udinese game on Saturday evening. Hopefully it will a be game worth remembering for the right reasons and we'll get the three points. I'll tell Mirko ye all said hi, too. Forza Roma.
Giovanni Malago? I found this post about his birthday last year, and look who was there! (typically Italian, I notice that the blog starts off with pictures of the women who attended)
Also from 2009 (I had forgotten about this, because there was always a list of new names coming up, shortly followed by the new person's denial):
AS ROMA
Rome businessman Giovanni Malago categorically denied on
Thursday he is trying to create a consortium to buy Rome soccer
club AS Roma. Also on Thursday Italpetroli, which controls the
club, denied a media report it has given a mandate to Mediobanca
Ha! Three posts in a row (I know that's far from a record, but it's unusual for me), but they're on three different themes.
Menez had about 100,000 euros stolen from his home while he was there. (what were he and his 'friends' doing up at 4:00 a.m. or did I miss something?)
Lupa, your humour is running true to form re/translations...

How I wish I hadn't looked forward to reading the contents of Ranieri's "forum" from Tuesday, as given by Il Romanista... I gave up quite early in when I reached the point where he says he wants Roma to play like Barcelona. We all make mistakes and I will learn from that one. When there is no news, its better to have no posts at all than a load of "wishful thinking!" Even with new owners and a bag of cash over his shoulder to spend, he's not the man to make that happen...
----------------------------------------
La Lega Calcio has given its official fixture changes. Obviously our main concern here is the San Siro "trasferta" against the Milanese...
Sabato, 18 dicembre 2010, ore 18.00: Cesena - Cagliari Sabato, 18 dicembre 2010, ore 20.45: Milan - Roma Domenica, 19 dicembre 2010, ore 12.30: Lazio - Udinese Domenica, 19 dicembre 2010, ore 20.45: Sampdoria - Genoa
Fiorentina-Inter is still undecided and is postponed owing to Inter's commitment in the World Club Cup tournament.
----------------------------------------
I'm surprised there has been no Formazione Probabile yet listed on the 'net though it doesn't really take too much working out. If someone else hasn't posted one, later when they appear, I will do when I can manage to be online.
Al termine dell´allenamento odierno mister Ranieri ha diramato la lista dei calciatori convocati per Roma.-Udinese di domani.
1 BOGDAN LOBONT 2 CICERO JOAO DE CESARE (CICINHO) 3 PAOLO CASTELLINI 4 JUAN SILVEIRA DOS SANTOS 5 PHILIPPE MEXES 7 DAVID MARCELO CORTES PIZARRO 8 RIBEIRO LEITE ADRIANO 9 MIRKO VUCINIC 10 FRANCESCO TOTTI 13 VITORINO GABRIEL PACHECO ANTUNES 19 JULIO CESAR BAPTISTA 22 MARCO BORRIELLO 23 LEANDRO GRECO 25 GULLIERMO ENIO BURDISSO 27 JULIO SERGIO BERTAGNOLI 29 NICOLAS ANDRES BURDISSO 30 SIMPLICIO FABIO HENRIQUE 33 MATTEO BRIGHI 77 MARCO CASSETTI 87 ALEANDRO ROSI 94 JEREMY MENEZ
So no Riise and DDR. So Castellini leftback or maybe Cassetti and either Rosi or Cicnho rightback? Or maybe we gonna see iTunes? Good to see Juan and Pizarro back. Hopefully Mexes will start again since he very impressive the last few weeks.
I've been looking around and have seen a number of possible formations. I should think Simplicio, Greco, Pizarro, and Ménez will all be selected to start. I was reading a piece about Antonio Di Natale and I don't think any of us need reminding he scored a tripletta last week. We better be sure he doesn't score at all tomorrow!
Romagiallorossa are suggesting a central defensive pairing of Nico Burdisso-Juan, with Pizarro, Simplicio, Greco, and Ménez in midfield and a front two of Totti and Borriello. If Vuci starts on the bench for this one, Ed with take convulsions!
