Roma To Sign Castillo Or Menez

According to reports in Italy, Roma will sign either Manchester City’s Nery Castllo, or Monaco’s Jeremy Menez before the end of the transfer window.


The Giallorossi last week completed the capture of Real Madrid’s Julio Baptista, and they are expected to make one more offensive signing before the end of August.

Reports in Italy suggest that either Castllo or Menez will arrive at the Stadio Olimpico to fill the void left by the sale of Amantino Mancini to Inter.

The Romans are one of two clubs in negotiations to secure the services of Castillo, the other being Real Betis. The Mexican burst onto the scene last year in the Copa America, earning himself a big money move to Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, he struggled in Ukraine, and after making just six starts, Castillo was signed on loan by Sven Goran Eriksson, then manager of Manchester City, in December 2007.

He was plagued by a shoulder injury, however, which led him to make just two starts for The Citizens, and he has been tipped to move on again, with his agent Juan Carlos revealing last week that negotiations with Roma were at an “advancedâ€

Well, Mediaset today was full of the Nery Castillo to Roma affair being at an advanced stage.

Other than myself and giallo_rossi, no-one seems to be willing to take the bait and comment on this guy...I can only say he lit up last summer's Copa America for me and I'm not in any way put off by his term in purgatory, or Manchester if you prefer, and though I don't excuse his behaviour with Lucarelli at Shaktar Donesk, I don't see him picking up at Roma where Cassano's temperament left off! It would seem our club, Man City, Castillo, and his agent are saying "Yes, let's do it!"

This article by Ch4 maintains that Shaktar Donesk will be only too pleased to release him from their ownership but everything will have to go off smoothly as I've been saying because there will be no time for negotiating our way round differences of demands with just 6 days left to complete a deal...

more than anyone, it was likely mutu that they 'failed' to get. the mancini cash was intended to subsidise the intended mutu signing.

the reports i read mentioned that suazo was originally being offered as compensation in the mancini transaction but roma wasnt interested since they were in hot pursuit of mutu at the time (and roma management were also reportedly not all that happy with what went down the previous season when they tried to get him from cagliari).

Now this is what I wanted to see because it confirms our management are still trying to pull off something more before the shutters drop on Monday! maro had Esposito fingered for the bums rush and I reckoned we wouldn't lose sleep over both he and Brighi going. Unless someone can advise differently, our affordable options in an exchange deal with Chievo and Torino are limited in terms of talent so I'm hoping maro may be right in suggesting we could still get Drenthe on loan.
