Lazio fan killed - Serie A stopped?

Inter-Lazio and all Sunday’s Serie A games could be called off after a Lazio fan was killed – apparently by a policeman – during a fight with Juventus supporters. Initial reports are low on details at the moment, but it is believed two groups of Ultras clashed when they crossed paths at a motorway service station in Badia al Pino, Arezzo.

A Lazio fan was killed during the fighting, but it is currently claimed this was an accident caused by police officers. A shot rang out to try to distract the group and the news agencies are suggesting the bullet struck the Lazio supporter.

An emergency meeting is currently being held between Lega Calcio President Antonio Matarrese and police chief Antonio Manganelli to decide whether to suspend Inter-Lazio or possibly the entire Week 12 fixture list. There are fears that if it is confirmed a fan was killed by police officers, the tension between them and the Ultras around Italy will rise to dangerous levels this weekend.

Arezzo DA Vincenzo Giacobbe released a statement on the tragic incident. “We are ascertaining the chain of events and how this happened. We are sorry about this fatality. “Once we have confirmed the responsibility, whoever it was will be rigorously prosecuted.â€

E' il giorno di Roma-Cagliari – Torniamo ad essere "bellissimi"


(AS_ROMA | 10/11/2007) - E' questa la partita ideale per mettere da parte tutte le polemiche e tornare ad essere "bellissimi", proprio come auspicato da Luciano Spalletti ieri in conferenza stampa. La Roma stasera ospiterà il Cagliari di Giampaolo, quart'ultimo in classifica, e cercherà di restare in scia di Inter e Fiorentina (rispettivamente prima e seconda) che se la vedranno in casa con Lazio e Udinese. Dovrebbe esserci l'esordio dal primo minuto per Mauro Esposito, proprio contro la sua ex squadra. Per il resto, il tecnico dovrebbe confermare Brighi al fianco di De Rossi, con Pizarro dietro la punta Vucinic e confermare Mancini come esterno d'attacco sulla fascia sinistra. In difesa spazio a Panucci e Ferrari al posto di Cicinho e Mexes, mentre fiducia illimitata a Cassetti terzino sinistro dopo il bel gol contro lo Sporting in Champions League.

BREAKING NEWS: INTER-LAZIO OFF

Inter-Lazio has been called off after the tragic death of a Biancocelesti supporter. The other Serie A games are going ahead, but 15 minutes late. This morning at around 9.00 local time a group of Lazio Ultras attacked a small number of Juventus supporters at a motorway service station in Badia al Pino, Arezzo.

The Bianconeri appealed to a passing police car for help and in the ensuing melee a shot was fired, killing one of the Lazio fans. It is believed the shot went off by accident.

The victim has been named as 26-year-old Gabriele Sandri, a famous DJ in the Rome area who was also well known to members of the Lazio squad and staff. As San Siro was emptied, Lazio staff members were seen walking away in tears after discovering the name of the slain supporter.

Inter-Lazio has now officially been called off, while the other Serie A games will begin 15 minutes late as a sign of mourning.

There are fears the way this incident played out means fans around Italy will increase the tension against the police and there have already been clashes in Bergamo between Atalanta Ultras and the authorities. Fans around the country are removing their banners from the stadiums in a sign of mourning and protest.


Trust the Atalanta Ultras to get involved in this in support of they're Lazio counterparts. This could get bad.

These Atalanta 'fans' are obviously reacting to the news of the Lazio fan being killed by the police (if true). I was watching Sky News and it had a newsflash saying Atalanta-Milan was abondoned, which followed by the typical rants of how violence in Italian football is still a big problem. Do these 'fans' not realise what harm they are doing to the game? Yes, someone was tragically killed, but by all accounts at this stage it looks like it was not directly related to calcio, yet we have this shit continuing.
