That (the Romagnoli pic) would make a certain sense of things for us, wouldn't it? Of course, it may well be bullshit, but it would explain the lack of certain kinds of rhetoric from both parties.

I think you're right about a lot of it Gio. He certainly couldn't care less about our history and legacy. Roma ai Romani and all that.

It's unfair to suggest he hasn't invested his money. It's well documented how much money they've put in the club. (I didn't bother to find out but it's a public company and they've released press releases when they've done capital investment.)

It's also crazy to think the club isn't in much better shape, not only financially but talent-wise.

The club got in trouble for FFP so it's safe to say he's not taking anything out of the club and frankly they've done yeoman's work keeping us where we are given the massive disadvantage we have financially compared to the other Milan clubs and Juve.

Romagnoli more than likely wanted out or he would not have been sold. You know as well as the rest of us that the minute we don't qualify for the CL our ability to compete becomes virtually untenable and guys like Pjanic and Manolas are more than likely gone.

I wasn't on board for Dzeko but the truth is he might be what we need to keep us in the European money until we get the Stadio to provide us with the revenue streams to compete. In addition Walter has shown himself adept at finding central defenders and less so at finding #9s. Paying for a proven commodity while sacrificing an unknown one at that position makes a lot of sense in that regard.

I'm not saying that James isn't in it solely for an appreciating asset and we all know Walter would rather field a team of South Americans than a single Roman. But as much as i'd like it to be better, I have to admit it could be much worse.

Very good post DCG, I think thats a good, fair, analyses of our current ownership set up. Romagnoli could've easily been the biggest giallorosso fanatic and have tattoos of Totti on his arse, yet its likely Pallotta and co. wouldn't give a monkeys and sold him for profit.

I agree about Romagnoli, Giovanni. For you to say that, given what has transpired with him after his move, it means a lot. Just think, if he hadn't have been sold (if Mihajlovic didn't insist on him; if Milan didn't have a new rich suger-daddy), then his gay laziale tendencies wouldn't have come out. You have lots of people now saying that "ah sure he was always a laziale", "everyone always knew that", but that isn't true, no one knew anything concrete before his move. Yes, there were suspicions, such as that in Tom's post above, and because of his family in Anzio, but nothing was known. In Rome, as in many cities with local rivalries, there are always crossovers (Conti, Muzzi, Di Biagio, Rosi, D’Alessandro), despite how fierce that rivalry may be. He remains a Roma youth product who joined the club at 15 after being scouted by Conti, and I think more could've been done to keep a homegrown player and another Roman. As it stands, he is gone for good money (silly money, really), and recent revelations of his background have soften the blow (or erased it?), so fuck it, fuck him and fuck the pig-fuckin laziale culchies.

I also wouldn't be too optimistic about the season ahead, and I'm not really sure if we are building something – as a team – anymore. Pallotta and the board have their own ambitions, their own 'project', which involves the new stadio and infrastructure and marketing and high-profile pre-season friendlies in Asia and with Europe's elite clubs etc, and thats all grand, but on the field? I don't know anymore. Its 10 days to the new season and we still need two or three new defenders. Who is our CB back-up? Left-back, right-back? Will Garcia even be here next season? This season is his last chance (which in itself is ludicrous, but thats the way it is in football these days), and in all likelihood he will be gone after the season (or probably during it). Lots of high-profile signings, yes, lots of money spent, on top of lots of money generated from 'unused' player sales, a renewed sense of optimism in some quarters, but I'm struggling to feel it myself. A CL place would be grand.

1. That is an insane, knock-down price for Dzeko.
2. As was noted in one of the pieces I linked to above, for the first time this summer (so far, so good), the American incarnation of the club hasn't sold one of its key starters. However much the Romagnoli sale is a blow, it's certainly allowed that to happen. The midfield has been retained (hopefully for the first time with both Strootman and Niggernoolan serious options for big swathes of the season); Salah and Dzeko surely don't make the forward-line weaker than last year's feeble showing; the defence isn't obviously more of a shambles than it was last year; the keeping stocks are better (to however little effect).
3. Surely Dzeko's ones hell of an up-grade on Destro and Doumbia? He's never quite convinced me at ManShitty, but he almost has, and that's something. He scores some very fine goals; he's technically pretty sharp; he holds the ball up very well. Perhaps he lacks half a yard and a certain autostima? It will be interesting to see how he does, but he's certainly about three steps above any of the centreforwards the club has signed over the past five years. Borini? Nonda? Tavani?

I suspect he wanted to go. I think had he wanted to stay, we'd have kept him. I don't know that to be true but I think it is. If for no other reason than had he stood up and said he loved the shirt and is sad to be forced out they'd have hung Saba by the toenails.

The most telling thing about all of this is that the Ultras never cared he was sold. No protests at Trigoria, no banners left outside, nothing.
