Alright I've been patient long enough. Garcia's has to go. He's gots to go. Despite our "success" last season we played some pretty boring football and we've continued that this season. It's becoming a chore to watch and I blame Gracia. Someone bring back Spalletti.

Bruno Conti: Francesco Totti Deserves One More Scudetto With Roma

Bruno Conti was interviewed last week by Italian daily Avvenire ahead of his 60th birthday on Friday; here is what the Roma legend had to say...

They called me Marazico. I went back home [after the World Cup] and I won the 'first true' scudetto with Roma, in 1983. They're memories from a century ago but at 60 years old, when my thoughts flicker back to it - even if it's just for an instant - it makes me feel like the young kid of yesterday again.

Let's start off with when the Americans hadn't yet arrived in Rome and were instead trying to take you to the USA to play baseball

I was a little kid then. I used to watch the pitcher Alfredo Lauri and I was in love with baseball. Santa Monica were about to sign me, but Dad was opposed to it.

Didn't he like baseball?

My father was enamoured with football and Roma. He only planted yellow and red flowers in the garden, and he also painted the pipes of the boiler in those colours... I still remember how happy I made him when I came back home and told him, "Dad, Roma have signed me"... [pauses] ... I cry too easily...

It was hard work to get into the Giallorossi youth setup

I'd had a bunch of trials that had gone badly. Bologna and Sambenedettese discarded me, and the first time at Roma, 'il Mago' Helenio Herrera said 'no' to me. The verdict was always the same: "Technically good, but too small and fragile physically". I was only just 1.65m high. To make me 'grow', Franco Ferrari, the Nettuno coach, made me hang from the crossbar at the end of training sessions. "It'll make you taller, Brunè, you'll see", he said. I didn't grow a millimetre!

Roma bought you in the end though

I was 17 years old that summer. I was in Anzio and people noticed me in bar tournaments where I was playing against players from Serie C. It was Tonino Trebiciani who believed in me, he brought me into the Primavera and in a flash I went from being an amateur to making my debut in Serie A against Torino. It's a fairy tale, for a young player today that would be almost impossible.

The real problem is our mentality is wrong: win, and quickly, without waiting for young players to improve. And of course, the influx of foreigners can be rationalised because teams are trying to find gems, those who are better than the average Italian player. This was happening up until 20 years ago, before agents started this mass export of players.

Let's go back to when you were 18 and making your debut among the greats of Nils Liedholm's team

Liedholm was part of my life... In my first training session he put me in front of great players like De Sisti and Cordova and in his Swedish accent he said to the team: "Watch this youngster: Bruno, show us your control with your instep". He didn't like quarrels, at the slightest hint of an argument he'd say, "Shake his hand right now!". I do the same with our guys today.

There are very few people in the world who are as superstitious as he was. Woe betide anyone who put flowers in the dressing room, and he'd always leave the dressing room with his hands in his pockets and his left foot forward. Whenever we went up to play Milan and he left the training camp, we knew that he'd be at Bienate to consult his magician, Mario Maggi.

The 'Baron' sent you off to gain experience at Genoa

And I was lucky, because I found another man who taught me about life and football there, Gigi Simoni. He took a punt on a young lad full of enthusiasm but with no experience, and I paid him back in full: Genoa were promoted to Serie A and I was given the "Guerin d'Oro" as the league's best player. It all enabled me to go back to Roma alongside 'il Bomber', Roberto Pruzzo.

Pruzzo, Serie A's top scorer, was left at home for the World Cup, and instead you were the only Roma player in the Azzurri squad

One of me against those six Juventini... We were enemies in the league because of the colour of our shirts, but in the national team I and people like Zoff, Gentile, Cabrini, Scirea and Tardelli were 'fratelli d'Italia' long before the inno di Mameli [Italian national anthem]. After the Mundialito [in 1980], in Uruguay the press began to call Pruzzo 'Grumpy' and that was his downfall. Plus Bearzot had Paolo Rossi in mind, and now we know that he was absolutely right to.

Bearzot was also right to wait for the injured Bruno Conti...

I arrived at the training camp in Alassio still recovering from a knee injury. I was convinced that if I wanted to keep that number 7 shirt, which otherwise Causio would have taken, I needed to work like crazy. After the first training session Bearzot realised what I was doing, he took me to one side and said to me, "Look son, stop forcing yourself, be calm - the place is yours". I won the World Cup right there and then. Liedholm spoke about the spirit of the group, Bearzot taught us how to feel like a family, he asked us to be real men ahead of great footballers. And in that national team we had the fortune to have 22 guys who knew how to be both.

What are the best encounters you've had other than on the football pitch?

With Pope John Paul II and the President of the Republic, Sandro Pertini, who was our leading supporter in the [World Cup] final at the Bernabeu alongside the King of Spain. I became a huge fan of the President during the live broadcast from Vermicino on Rai: I was awake for the whole night at the training camp in front of the TV, praying that Alfredino Rampi would get out of that well alive... Pertini's tears caused by [Rampi's] death are still the symbol of that administration who put the well-being and the happiness of the Italian people above everything else. It's not like that any more now, the only person who works for the good of everyone is Pope Francis.

Have you met Pope Francis?

Not yet, I'm happy enough looking at the photo from when Pope Francis visited Cagliari and greeted my grandchildren, Daniele's sons.

Will we see a third generation of Contis on the pitch?

Manuel and Brunetto, who is the spitting image of me, are in soccer schools in Cagliari. They're delightful, talented, and most of all they're enjoying themselves. They made me cry twice when I've been watching TV - that Sunday when their father [Daniele] scored twice and in turn they ran to embrace him.

What do you like and what makes you sad about today's football?

I like the eternal passion for the game. I don't like the fact that players generally earn more but enjoy themselves less on the pitch compared to my generation. The distance that has been created between them and the fans makes me sad, and it's a division that has been fed by the media. Yesterday's press was better, there were true giants then like Nando Martellini, Beppe Viola and 'Bisteccone' Galeazzi who came into the dressing rooms and brought us pasta.

Time goes by, but the duel for the scudetto between Juventus and Roma goes on

There's been talk about the 'Juventus style' for some time, but ours, with il Barone [Liedholm], president Viola and his wife Flora was better! Our style was the immense class of Falcao, the Curva Sud and everyone's attachment to the shirt, starting with my captain and brother Agostino Di Bartolomei, who is still here with me, in my heart.


There's only one 'core de Roma' now, Francesco Totti

A fantastic guy, woe betide anyone who touches Francesco. I really want Totti to finish his career with another scudetto. He, Sabatini and president Pallotta would deserve it as they've built a great Roma side.

What present would you like for your 60th birthday?

I already received it 38 years ago, the time I've had with my wife Laura. I get my other present every day when people meet me on the street and greet me with the same affection as when I was playing. My biggest victory? That even Lazio fans like me.

Nel primo tempo prende il sole, ma il cuore gli si scalda su un retropassaggio, alto e da brivido, di Holebas. Nella ripresa il cuore gli prende fuoco definitivamente sulla zampata di Maxi Lopez, ma non ha grandi colpe. Sfiora il “senza voto”.

FLORENZI 7
Due o tre cross velenosi, un palo, il gol. Fa di nuovo il terzino dopo aver fatto, bene, l’attaccante. Sono Florenzi, risolvo problemi. E da oggi tiro pure i rigori. Una prestazione di spessore, sempre con grande qualità tecnica.

MANOLAS 6,5
Un anticipo in scivolata in area nella prima frazione e non molto altro; nella ripresa intervento miracoloso su Lopez dopo il pari granata. Poco lavoro ma fatto bene. Si poteva risparmiare il giallo (sarà squalificato) dell’ultimo minuto.

ASTORI 6
Un rinvio diventa un passaggio all’avversario, ma a parte questo incidente, non vive un pomeriggio particolarmente apprensivo. Forse poteva essere più reattivo su Lopez in occasione del gol.

HOLEBAS 4
L’amnesia, imperdonabile, su Bruno Peres in occasione del pareggio del Torino è molto grave. Al di là della posizione del pallone, un pezzetto dentro o tutto fuori. Sfiora nel finale il 2-1, sarebbe stato un bel riscatto. E invece…

PJANIC 5,5
La sua grinta è rimasta sotto la Curva Sud nel sabato di Pasqua. Viaggia sul velluto, poco incisivo (tranne una azione nel primo tempo che parte dai suoi piedi), vince pochi contrasti e non prende per mano la squadra. Parte molto basso, questo sì. E non è un’attenuante da poco.

DE ROSSI 6,5
Perentorio e massiccio. Difende e orchestra il palleggio della Roma. Si procura il rigore ma si becca l’ammonizione che gli farà saltare l’Atalanta. Non male, comunque.

NAINGGOLAN 6
Corre e rincorre, il suo lo fa. Anche in fase offensiva, quando scodella una palla d’oro in area e sul piede di Ljajic. Un bel tiro a pochi minuti dal gong, Padelli gli nega una gioia e lascia il secondo posto alla Lazio. Qualche pasticcio, per generosità.

IBARBO 4,5
Ciondola a destra, poi a sinistra, un’accelerazione mette i brividi a mezza difesa granata. Un paio di palle buone le cicca di testa e si ammoscia nella ripresa. Il gol non è certamente un suo amico, e all’Olimpico di Torino lo si vede in maniera nettissima.

ITURBE 6
Prova a sfondare il muro del Toro, andando a lottare su ogni pallone. Prova dalla distanza, ma non è giornata. Tonico, ma sfortunato. E la mira continua ad essere, diciamo così, poca precisa.

LJAJIC 5,5
Ha la palla per finire in Paradiso: la stoppa col mento, o comunque in maniera goffa, e l’occasione è persa. Vivace, poco incisivo. Dà l’idea di girare troppo al largo dal cuore dell’area avversaria.

DOUMBIA 4,5
Entra e non lascia traccia. Sembra svenire su ogni pallone. O non ha forza sulle gambe oppure non ha proprio forza.

YANGA MBIWA NG
La consuetudine dell’ultimo mese lo vuole terzino nel finale. Da stopper, senza mai affondare il colpo.

UÇAN NG
Entra bene, il giovane turco, ma di tempo per inventare ce n’è ormai poco.

GARCIA 6
La partita la gioca attaccando o quantomeno mantenendo l’iniziativa. E’ la classica giornata in cui guardi la squadra e ti dici: se avessi un attaccante vero…

IRRATI 5
Il fallo di Moretti su De Rossi è quasi impercettibile. E il capitano della Roma dà la sensazione di andare addosso alla gamba dell’avversario. La palla di Peres sembra uscita, quindi il gol di Maxi non sarebbe valido.
