Alessandro Florenzi: Playing For Roma Is A Dream Come True / Tuesday, 15 April 2014 18:31 / Anthony Wright
Born in Rome and raised as a Roma supporter, Alessandro Florenzi told La Freccia magazine that it is a dream come true for him to play for his boyhood club and hopes that this Giallorossi side can return to the levels achieved by Luciano Spalletti's squad who the midfielder grew up watching.
Florenzi and a football, it must have been love at first sight when you were a small boy. You grew up in the Roma youth system, what does that mean to you? It's a huge source of pride for me without a doubt, it's a dream come true. Roma have allowed me to grow, to become a professional player for the team I've always supported, and all with the chance to have my family beside me. I really couldn't have hoped for more. Now I just have to keep working and sweating to make sure I deserve to stay, to continue to dream with open eyes.
You've played in a lot of positions in your career, which one do you prefer? I like the one which Rudi Garcia is asking me to play in. But I have to admit I enjoy playing anywhere in midfield.
From a player to a supporter; do you enjoy watching other teams, other leagues - either in the stadium or on the tv? No, I just get excited about Roma. I follow other teams mostly on TV but with a critical eye, not as a supporter. It's part of my job, it helps me to learn, to study opponents and to watch moves from players who are more experienced than I am.
The 2014 World Cup - is it a good thing or a bad thing to play England first? How much of a chance do we have of winning our fifth title in Brazil? I don't know if starting against England will be good or bad. The World Cup is a competition unto itself. You have to start well straight away, whether you're playing against one of the favourites or one of the outsiders. You don't have time to make mistakes, because it could compromise your place in the tournament. Italy will have its say as always - even in Brazil. We have an excellent group made up of the right mix of experienced players, iconic players from our league and talented youngsters. And of course I'm hoping to be part of it.
Have you ever played fantasy football? Is there one player who you can't leave out of your team? I've often played fantasy football with my friends but not this year. The keystone to my team has always been Pirlo, I buy him in every tournament. I like his style a lot, I think he's one of the most complete midfielders ever.
Would you buy Florenzi? What is your biggest merit and biggest flaw on the pitch? I think my unselfishness is my main virtue, but it can sometimes also become a flaw. If I keep running after every ball it can mean that I am less clear headed in some situations. But I'm working on that.
What do you enjoy doing apart from football? I like playing pool a lot, it helps you to think and to find your focus. I also like to spend my free evenings at home with my friends, we often enjoy ourselves doing karaoke.
Is there a place in Rome where you feel particularly tied to? Piazza Venezia, in the heart of the city, between the Capitol Hill and the Forum. Among other things, it reminds me of happy times with my current girlfriend. It's a fantastic place.
A metre off the ground, with breath held and eyes on the ball - overhead kick, goal. How does it feel to try one of the most spectacular stunts in football? It's something I try a lot in training. The most difficult thing, apart from the thought of doing it, is actually hitting the ball! In January against Genoa, I did well but was lucky as well to score a crazy goal.
Roma Ti Amo is an exhibition to celebrate and rediscover a great Italian team. What's it like? There's shirts, relics, photos, trophies and old newspaper articles which will allow anyone to find out about the capital club's history. I saw Totti's first membership card there as well, plus the All Star Game match ball which I signed as the man of the match. I'd advise everyone to go, it's a really original exhibition.
Which Roma team has remained in your heart the most? Which is the one you dream of, which you'd like to see again? Spalletti's Roma, it gave me great joys as a supporter. They played really well and made themselves known both in Italy and in Europe. I'd like Roma to return to those levels.
Which Roma player could be nicknamed Frecciarossa? Gervinho!
On loan Roma midfielder Federico Viviani commented on speculation regarding his future. Where do you feel you need to improve? “I’m trying to improve on my pace of the game and intensity on the field. I want to improve from this point of view, and to get the best results each time.”
What do you expect for the future? “Going back to Roma and playing at a high level would be a dream. I’m sure sooner or later, I’ll be able to play with continuity in a great team like Roma. Now it’s up to me to decide my future, I don’t know if I will return to the capital or go play elsewhere next season. It would still be the best for me to return to Roma. But now, I’m thinking only of this great season at Latina because we still have big goals to reach.”
Everyone takes football so seriously - there's so much anger, aggression, hostility, negative emotion, so much money, hype, so much pressure. And then a photo like that captures that at the heart of it all is really just a version of a few local lads having a kick-about together on a Saturday. Three Roman lads kicking a footy about and having a laugh about it afterwards - just as lots of other Roman lads had done earlier in the day.
Good stuff from Collie. Would you call Roma sleeping giants? In the traditional sense in terms of number of scudetti, probably not, but for the most part we've nearly always been there or there abouts. More so in the 80s', when we probably should have won more titles, as Giovanni will no doubt agree.
Borriello will be back. Has he even played for West Ham?
With RG doing so well, this was inevitable I suppose: (last name)
Rudi Garcia has revealed he wants to stay at AS Roma, but he wants a competitive squad to do so. In an interview with the director of Sport Mediaset Claudio Brachino, the ambitious Frenchman confirmed his wish to stay in the Italian capital, so long as he has a squad capable of competing in Italy and Europe.
“I want to remain at Roma but I want a competitive squad, capable of tackling the Champions League whilst competing for the Scudetto at the same time”.
Garcia continued, “my wish is very clear and I have already told Roma what I think. I am not interested in the rumours about PSG or other teams. I do not make any special conditions, however next season we will play in the Champions League and we must be ready. We will face an even more competitive championship next season, and maybe our points total will be less but it could be enough for Scudetto next time. But above all, I repeat, we must be able to face the Champions League well. My aim is not to win that competition right now, because we are not built for that yet but I want to be able to win our group and advance to the knockout stages”.
In order to realise Garcia’s ambitions a strong mercato is required and he added that this is still something that needs to be discussed. “The transfer market is still something to talk about, but this is a particular week. We have an earlier game than usual where we face Milan on Friday night and we remain concentrated on Serie A. However it is clearly an advantage to qualify for the Champions League so early because it gives us more time to plan”.
Focusing on the championship, the next obstacle ahead of Roma is Milan in the continued chase of Juventus. The ex-Lille man still believes in a fight back. “I still believe in the Scudetto, of course I do. Everything is still open and possible. It is clear however that we will have to win every match, starting on Friday. If we do, then we can wait for Monday to see how Juve do with Sassuolo, hoping that they can do what they need to do because they are playing for survival”. Garcia concluded by saying, “We have seen teams playing against Juve that are also playing for safety but then on the pitch have done nothing, but Sassuolo are a good team and are in a positive moment. Certainly, if Juve do win then the chase will be almost closed but if they don’t then everything remains open”.
Speaking to Sport Mediaset while promoting his autobiography 'All roads lead to Rome', Rudi Garcia said that he is not concerned by rumours linking him with possible jobs at other clubs this summer but stressed that he wants a competitive Roma side for next season.
On next season I want to stay at Roma but I want a competitive squad, capable of taking on the Champions League while being able to fight for the scudetto at the same time. I know what I want to do, and I've already said what I think to the club. I'm not interested in the rumours concerning Paris Saint-Germain or any other club. I'm not imposing any particular conditions, all I am saying is that we'll be playing in the Champions League next year and we'll have to be ready. Next year the league will also be even more difficult than this year; maybe we'll get less points but maybe we'll win the league. I'll say it again though, most of all we have to be in condition to compete at our best in the Champions League. We won't be playing to win it because that's not possible right now, we've not been built for it, but we want to be major players in the group phase and qualify for the second phase at least.
If this is to happen you'll need a good transfer window We've yet to talk about the transfer market. This is an unusual week, a short week because we'll be playing this Friday against Milan. That's why we're only focusing on the league. But of course it's an advantage for us to have qualified for the Champions League so early, because it allows us to work even harder and even better.
Milan are an obstacle you'll have to pass if you want to keep believing in catching Juventus I still believe in the scudetto. Of course I believe in it. Even now anything is possible. It's obvious that we'll have to win every game, starting with Friday's game, but if we win then we'll wait for Monday to see what Juventus do against Sassuolo. We'll be hoping that Sassuolo will do what they can because they're playing for safety. In recent games we've seen teams play against Juventus who were fighting for safety but then did nothing on the pitch, but Sassuolo are a good side and are having a positive moment. It's true that if Juventus beat Sassuolo then the title race will basically be over, but if they don't win then it's all still open.
Sounds shitty but probably good as fans. if the rumors of 30-35 mill are true that's 1 or 2 starter quality players. Not enough if we hope to play in Europe and compete for the League.
