I'm not sure I quite read Plato's Atlantis 'fable' in the same way as you guys, but it's certainly possible he's giving expression to a kind of collective wisdom, an accumulation of long-standing oral culture. I tend to think his interest is more in the parable than in the historical, but I'll have another look this week.

What are those beautiful and profound notions, Pauly? I'm always interested in what different people find in Plato. I was doing bits of Book 10 with my Virgil students this week, in fact - there's a key passage in Book 6 of the 'Aeneid' which plays off the 'Phaedo' and the end of Book 10.
