Well, happy new year anyway, Stefano, and all. The missus and I made it through to about quarter to 11 which is quite good going by our standards. Not too many sore heads here today, then. Actually New Years Day is an occasion on which I most miss home - in NZ it's got such a fantastic, slow, day-after feel to it and everyone ends up on the beach having a big bbq and working their way through the left-over beers. It's not quite the same to wake up to inch-thick hoar-frosts and a wind that chills your boner to the very core. There's a lot to be said for a summery Christmas and New Years.

Don Tommasino, where did you spend the eve of the new year? Edge, quality.

We popped over to the neighbours for a few hours earlier in the evening but then snuck home where we had a couple of special bottles tucked away in the fridge. A bit lame, I know, but we've never really celebrated NYE in style in the UK. We got out of practice when we were students because virtually all of our closest friends were from far flung lands and the vast majority of them headed homewards for Christmas (all of the North Americans, for instance, and many of the antipodeans) which left us with Christmas with the out-laws and no-one to celebrate NYE with. When we're back in NZ it's a bit of a different story, but these days we tend to go over in April because of the way the semesters fall. So for NYE we've tended to cook ourselves a flash meal, tuck into a special bottle or two, and toast the fact that we've managed to survive another Christmas with the out-laws. There's not much energy left after that anyway, so we allow ourselves a little quiet satisfaction before the countdown to the next ordeal begins.

Tomorrow you all nerdvto watch NBC at noon central time. Redwings versus Blackhawks at Wrigley Field. It will be a great hockey game.

Is she hot? Just say you blacked out and put her in a bad light as if she forced it on you. We need some quality gossip until Serie A kicks back in Steve... It still strikes me at how big this world is when you're still up during a late night of NYE partying and I'm getting ready for bed to head to the office in the morning.

Also my guess with Maro was that it was Broccoli.

Grasso, hockey at Wrigley? No way... I used to follow the NHL quite a bit and then my team, the Blackhawks (who appear to be ok and on a streak recently) who were run into the group by the Wirtz family.. I remember the days, Chelios (now with the Red Wings and ageless), Suter, Weinrich, Roenick, Amonte, Daze, Belfour etc...

Actually this year it was pretty simple, in part because we were out earlier in the evening and in part because we've been mucking around in the kitchen for most of the time since we got back after Christmas (the moglie loves it when I take her against the fridge though the guys at the supermarket are less happy about it - by which, evidently, I mean less happy about my taking the moglie than about their being taken by me, if you see what I mean; they love the latter). We've been mucking about making our own ravioli and with a new Indian cookbook she gave me for Christmas - no hippo dahl recipes in there, though, I'm afraid. So yesterday it was just pizza and prosecco, though the prosecco was actually NZ bubbly from Marlborough, but the spirit was there. Pizza's pretty simple if you've got a bit of time; I always try and recapture the dizzy heights of the spinach and mascarpone gem I had from that little pizzeria on the corner of the main Piazza in Mantova. An aspiration, anyway.
