Serie A side Roma may have to be placed on the market as their owners face pressure to pay back heavy debts by the end of the year, the repubblica.it website reported Tuesday.

Unicredit Bank is believed to have asked the club owners, the Sensi family, for a first payment of 130 million euros (176.5 million dollars) and will refuse any further deferment beyond a December deadline.

The Sensis' total debts amount to 365 million euros, which could make them consider the sale of the club. The Sensis are a family of oil entrepreneurs who control the Rome club through Italpetroli. The oil trading company could consider the sale of part of its assets, which include land and an oil storage area outside Rome worth approximately 150 million euros.

The bank's ultimatum, however, could be met with the sale of the Italian club, which earlier this year was valued at 283 million euros as several US investors, among them George Soros, considered investing in Italian football. Three groups of investors are said to be interested in Roma, although the club's value may have fallen considerably due to the current worldwide financial crisis.

It is a shame that it has come to the point of being forced to sell Roma. I honestly think Rosella is simply delusional, immature, and certainly not equipped to handle a business. I do not know who is advising her, but it probably does not matter because she listens to nobody. Now she is scrambling to sell off some devalued real estate holdings in order to pay Unicredito. How long does she believe she can hold on and keep operating in this manner.

Is it me or is this 2005 all over again. The debt was weighing heavily on the club and the team was suffering on the pitch. I remember that summer leading into the season. We were not sure we would be playing in Serie A because of our financial problems. Presently, we are facing the prospect of a fire sale if you will or the takeover of the club by Unicredito, solely for the purpose of selling the club because Rosella just cannot comprehend the situation. The disappointing aspect of that article is that Caltigirone seems to be only interested in the acquiring some Real Estate. His group is playing a waiting game to see if there is a further diminution in the value of the Real Estate which may be exposed to sale. I am hoping that this will be part of a comprehensive offer to buy the club as well as the Real Estate. Some of that land is designated for the future site of the cittadella dello sport and if memory serves me correctly, that land cannot be developed for anything other than that purpose and the article states that also. So, if Caltigirone is only interested in the property, then why purchase something for approximately 100 million euro if you know it can only be used for this future project which is designed to enhance the value of A.S. Roma Calcio?

Italy's Serie A nudges towards breakaway

Italy's top flight Serie A could breakaway from the second division Serie B and form a Super League, officials have warned.

Club chairmen from the two divisions, which make up the Italian league, have been meeting this week to see how much money Serie A should hand down to Serie B.

Serie B clubs have struggled in recent years because of falling attendances and the lack of a television deal last season.

"Behind this there are projects grander than us like a Super League and the changing of the rules for TV," league president Antonio Matarrese told reporters.

England's Premiershit broke away from three other divisions in the old Football League in the early 1990s and has prospered thanks to its own television deals.

Serie A has watched with envy as the Premiershit has gone from strength to strength.

"The day has arrived. The league is 20 years behind and we cannot lose any more time," the president of Serie A's Cagliari Massimo Cellino was quoted as saying in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "Serie A is separating from B."

Serie A have offered 65 million euros to Serie B for this season but the second tier is widely expected to refuse the offer at a meeting later in the week.
