Football is a fickle, horrible, disloyal and deceitful game dominated by money. Thats not to say I don't like or enjoy it, but its just the way it is. But a last straw for me and many others, I would suspect, would be if Daniele De Rossi were to not sign a new contract and leave for nothing to join a club as horrible as Man City next summer. Daniele is a player you'd consider different from your stereotypical, mercenary, badge-kissing footballer these days, in that he's a one club man born and bred and loves Roma. If he were to do such a thing, football is utterly lost forever. There's no other way to look at it. So, he will sign his new deal soon, I'm sure.

Only two days left in this mercato madness (in a lot of ways, thank be to feck) ... any sign of Kjaer? Lady Gago? Pjanic? Anyone...? Loria?

Would you really consider him different from your stereotypical, mercenary, badge-kissing footballer? If he were proposing to sign a deal worth 2 mil a year, preferring to leave the extra money to the club to invest in its youth or in bringing in another player then he'd stand out. Had he been born and raised in Mantova I doubt he'd have been happy to stay at his home-town club on wages which didn't compromise their salary structure. Daniele is hardly different in kind from Aguero or Yaya Toure, to my mind; it's just that he embodies an idea one can cling to. That idea is precious and worth clinging to, no doubt, but that's not to Daniele's particular credit as a person.

Yeh, fair enough Tom. In that strict, rigid sense of financial reward I guess there's probably no person involved in the game who is so benevolent. Damiano Tommasi excluded, obviously. But if there are still footballers like that in todays modern game, or as close to those ideals as we'd like to hope, then perhaps Daniele comes close to it. A player is realistically not gonna say "ok I'll take €2m-a-year instead of €5m". In saying that, it reminds me of Paul Scholes and how he never had an agent and was more than happy to earn something like £3m-a-year, never asking for a raise and always negotiating his own contract renewals at the same money. Whatever about De Rossi, we're unlikely to ever see that again, I think, anyway.

and david, we're glad you remember de rossi's performance against portugal in the 2006 world cup. i'm sure you are the only one to remember that game. it might've been the last game in which de rossi could be described as a beast.

Also, from what I remember hearing, he was benched towards the end of his time there so that Barca wouldn't have to pay certain bonuses in his contract.
