Glad, seeing how Soccernet is the English press, they've cut out plenty of stuff (just like anyone else does). But in the end, it seems as if Roma bumbled again. Horay Sensis!!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

While we all complain about this whole vulture and poaching thing, let's not forget how many German greats came to Italy as a result of similar policies in the 80s and 90s. Such things are natural, and honestly, I cannot say that I would have made a different decision than Petrucci based on what I have read, especially if he is a poor kid. Imagine being poor, then being thrown not only that kind of money, but your family can come with you, papa is given a job (read: guaranteed additional income), and its the team that just won the European Championships.. Helps a lot.

how did roma 'bumble'? by law they can only give a 'minimum salary' and by existing figc regulations the duration is 3 years. its the exact same contract situation offered to totti, de rossi and aquilani....which as i'm sure you are aware, accepted. if your hands are tied, as the club's are in this situation, how do you lay blame on roma?

i'm not sure i follow the analogy regarding 'german greats" coming to italy. i dont recall voeller being part of a youth academy when he came to roma...or beirhoff when he went to milan.....or klinsmann with inter...etc. those teams were offering pro contracts on an 'even playing field with their german counterparts. not quite the same thing here.

Unal was part of the deal with Wahab going in the other direction (technically he was a loan but I think that was due to rules - not sure he was 17 at the time) and Messias was offered to Roma from his club (Careca showed up with him on a silver platter). Very different.

Glad, read the article on Soccernet. United had already made him an offer and then Roma came in with theirs and only gave him three days to decide whereas he asked for "a bit of time" to consider it. There is clearly more to it than we know, and while United did what Prem clubs have been doing for a while, I am sure there is some classic Roma mismanagement about it, there always is, and in such cases Rosella and Co will be guilty until proven innocent in my eyes.

As for other German greats, they were certainly not youth products but many were from Bayern who would buy them from poorer German clubs in order to sell them off at a high price to Italian bidders. A poor analogy at best, but I was struggling to come up with something. I guess I was just trying to capture the whole money and losing domestic players analogy, though its not a youth argument which is the heart of the matter.

is that 'gianfranco'? i was tempted to respond to him when he went on about how 'okay' ddr was and that he only managed ONE shot on goal and didnt win any balls in the middle. i decline mostly because i didnt know where to start on his 'assessment' and also felt this is just a lingering club sentiment wrt to milan vs roma midfield. it would have been a futile discussion just based on how far off his assessment was on both ddr and perrotta. he is clearly not able to come to terms with the benefits of having some roma players at the expense of milan players...and not admitting to their obvious value. it would have been like me proposing that ddr should at all costs replace gattuso in the starting eleven two years ago just because he played for roma. fact was, gattuso was on top of his game then and ddr was still too young and inexperienced to displace him. not the case any longer.
