Italy: Di Natale likely to start

Marcello Lippi tested out the 4-2-3-1 system in training, as Antonio Di Natale is increasingly likely to feature in Italy’s starting XI.
The Capocannoniere has been a regular feature in the varying formations used as the Azzurri prepare for the World Cup in South Africa. On Friday Lippi spent quite some time working on a 4-2-3-1 system that newspapers believe could start in the tournament proper.

Cristian Maggio and Gianluca Zambrotta were the full-backs flanking Fabio Cannavaro and youngster Leonardo Bonucci. Claudio Marchisio and Daniele De Rossi held the midfield behind Mauro Camoranesi, Pirlo, Di Natale and lone centre-forward Alberto Gilardino.

There were some adjustments later on in the session, as Domenico Criscito came on for Zambrotta, Vincenzo Iaquinta for his Juventus teammate Camoranesi, Giampaolo Pazzini replacing Gilardino and Simone Pepe for Udinese companion Di Natale. There were further changes with the introduction of Mattia Cassani, Gennaro Gattuso, Giuseppe Rossi, Andrea Cossu and Fabio Quagliarella.

Finally Angelo Palombo came on for Bonucci, Salvatore Bocchetti for Cannavaro, while Riccardo Montolivo and Marco Borriello replaced De Rossi and Pazzini. Giorgio Chiellini had a 30-minute session separate from the group, as he continues to recover from a muscular problem, while goalkeeper Federico Marchetti was rested as a precautionary measure following a knee twinge.
