Mutu will stay at Fiorentina if… Thursday 1 April, 2010

Adrian Mutu's agent believes his client will stay at Fiorentina if his suspension for failing two anti-doping tests is six months or less.

The Romania international twice tested positive for banned substance Sibutramine in January and has been provisionally banned while the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) considers his case.

Yesterday CONI's tribunal recommended that Mutu receive a one-year suspension.

Speaking to Lady Radio, Mutu's agent, Giovanni Becali, said: “Adrian will pay Fiorentina a fine because perhaps with his presence on the pitch they would today be in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and higher placed in Serie A.

“Fiorentina have behaved towards Mutu in the best of ways.

“If the ban were to be around six months, he will stay in Florence, otherwise I don't know,â€

Montolivo wanted in Germany Thursday 1 April, 2010

Wolfsburg are looking at Riccardo Montolivo as a possible summer transfer target, reports are claiming.

The German club have shopped in Serie A before when they hired Cristian Zaccardo and Andrea Barzagli from Palermo in 2008.

Now it is being suggested that they have pinpointed the Fiorentina midfielder as an ideal addition to their team for 2010-11.

It’s unlikely that Montolivo would leave for Wolfsburg though seeing as he is contracted at the Franchi until June 2012.

The Italian international, who is now club captain, would also attract the interest of the big three in the peninsula if he was made available for transfer.

Montolivo is valued at around €15m and joined the Tuscan giants in 2005 after graduating from the Atalanta youth academy.

Del Neri uncertain of Samp future Wednesday 14 April, 2010

Sampdoria boss Gigi Del Neri insists that he would like to stay at the club next season but warns that it takes two to tango.

The Blucerchiati have a real chance of qualifying for the Champions League in Del Neri's first year in charge and have lost just one of their last seven games in Serie A.

However, rumours continue to circulate that he will be replaced this summer with either Sinisa Mihajlovic or Massimiliano Allegri stepping into his shoes.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Del Neri was asked if he intends to stay at Marassi.

Fiorentina have officially announced that Sinisa Mihajlovic will be presented as their new Coach tomorrow. The club terminated its contract with Cesare Prandelli today so that he can take over the Italy bench after the World Cup.

This evening the Viola released a statement confirming that “Mihajlovic will be presented to the media at 12.00 tomorrow.

“The new Viola Coach will meet with and salute the Fiorentina directors tomorrow morning, then he will be presented to the Press at the conference centre in the Stadio Artemio Franchi.â€

I well remember Sinisa Mijhailovic in his playing days, often described as being a master of the free kick and an arrogant filthy swine on the park. He just didnt give a damn!

Well now he has to, and if I had doubted before his readiness to coach a team like La Viola, the fact they are now bottom of the league certainly hasn't done anything to inspire my confidence in him! Granted, the injury list he has to contend with would test the ability of a much more experienced allenatore. However, risking bringing back Vargas early from injury today against Samp may prove to be a costly mistake. Losing him in under 30 mins was a hammer blow as he had been responsible for much of anything that was good by Fiore, including a flying free kick which was only inches wide. Indeed, his assist, the move that brought about Marchionni's goal looked like a goal all the way through the build up. We saw it coming, it was that obvious!

But slowly Samp clawed their way back into things and for much of the game it was mostly them. As regards Pazzini's penalty incident, anyone who watched the match, if not in the initial act then in the action replay, saw him clearly tugging at Natali's shirt front. But for that, Pazzini would have got his penalty because of Natali's blatant obstruction.

By the time Ziegler had got his excellent free kick goal for Samp, I had long since made up my mind that Frey and Vargas were the best players Fiore had today. The defending which allowed Cassano to score the winner left a lot to be desired. To have come within 10 minutes of an away win and to then concede a goal left La Viola shell shocked... as we saw when they lost a second goal in just under a minute. That could have been avoided, it must be stated!

Right now, Fiore don't need the extra pressure of playing in the EL. Serie A survival is top priority. Corvino the direttore generale has rubbished claims that Carlos Dunga is waiting to replace Mijhailovic. A pity. Dunga as an ex Viola has more than once expressed a desire to return as coach. Could he be any worse than this?

But they got a lifeline last night with that win. Nicely taken goals...They are suffering, no question, without Mutu (Andrew posted a piece on him training again in view of his ending ban) and especially without Jovetic. Vargas wasn't playing either, I didn't think he would be, and Pasqual hasn't the same influence on a game. Still, they are off the bottom where it was a crime to see them lying!

I must say though, I like this 19 year old right sided midfielder they have, Adem Ljaic. He definitely has promise!

MILAN, Nov 3 (http://www.Reuters.com) - Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey will be out for four to six months after suffering a cruciate ligament injury, the Serie A club said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Florence side have a ready replacement for the Frenchman in Poland’s Artur Boruc but the injury is another blow amid a troubled start to the campaign for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men, who lie 15th.

Forward Stevan Jovetic was ruled out for six months before the start of the season with the same knee injury while Adrian Mutu has only just returned to action after a nine-months drugs ban but is being probed by police over an alleged assault.

He said that the Celtic fans loved him no matter what, so he got fat and lazy.

Will be interesting to see how he does, because he is a very good 'keeper when he is fit and focused.

Still, I will always fondly remember watching him concede four goals in a game at Pittodrie.

Generoso e veloce: Cresce il giovane Cerci

Una prestazione tra tante luci e qualche ombra quella di Alessio Cerci contro il Cesena. La miglior partita per il calciatore romano dal suo arrivo a Firenze, determinante per la seconda volta consecutiva: suo l’assist dell’1 a 0 a Gilardino, per un gol che vale tre punti d’oro. Nel primo tempo Cerci corre, taglia il campo e si fa sempre vedere, ma non riesce a essere incisivo; trova una grande intesa con Mutu che sfortunatamente intorno al 30esimo si fa male ed è costretto a uscire per lasciare spazio a Ljajic. Complice la poca frequenza di palloni girati dal talento serbo nella sua zona di campo, Cerci si eclissa per una ventina di minuti nei quali praticamente non tocca nemmeno un pallone. Riemerge poi al sesto minuto della ripresa saltando un difensore avversario e tentando di passare in mezzo a due, ma viene fermato. Poco lucido sotto porta non riesce a tramutare in gol una bellissima palla servitagli da Santana. Torna alla carica dell’area di rigore al 14esimo della ripresa, salta due avversari scambiandosi la palla con Ljajijc e sigla l’assist dell’uno a zero. Pochi minuti dopo, Cerci si rende ancora pericoloso grazie a un contropiede: Gilardino riceve un pallone a sinistra e con un passaggio non proprio perfetto cerca di rendere all’ex Pisa e Roma il favore, ma senza successo. Il giovane viola chiude la sua partita riportando la squadra in attacco al 42esimo, rendendosi pericoloso sulla destra e conquistandosi un calcio d’angolo. Insomma Cerci cresce, eccome.

La vedova del calciatore della Fiorentina, morto di leucemia nel 1987 a 39 anni, fa causa a tecnico e medici. Nel '76 lo bombardarono per tre mesi di radiazioni per curare una pubalgia. Richiesta di risarcimento per 10 milioni: "Li daremo in beneficenza"

Il male bussò a tradimento il 23 agosto 1985. Dolori atroci agli arti superiori. "Un reumatismo", constatò il medico. Poi comparvero i puntini rossi in faccia, le gengive iniziarono a sanguinare, Bruno Beatrice smise di avere fame. Era piena estate, ma i brividi di freddo lo facevano sussultare. "Leucemia linfoblastica acuta", fu il responso di un luminare.

Bruno Beatrice, polmone della Fiorentina degli anni Settanta, se ne andò due anni dopo. Aveva 39 anni, due figli piccoli. Nella primavera del '76 - si ricordò tempo dopo la moglie - gli avevano fatto curare la pubalgia con un bombardamento di raggi X: a cadenza quasi quotidiana, per tre mesi. E Beatrice, pur di tornare in campo per la fase finale di Coppa Italia, aveva obbedito. Forte di una perizia di due consulenti della Procura di Firenze - Giuseppe D'Onofrio e Giuseppina Fortuna, per la quale sussiste certamente una compatibilità tra la somministrazione massiccia di terapia Roentgen e la leucemia", la famiglia Beatrice sta per depositare al tribunale di Firenze una richiesta di risarcimento danni di 10 milioni in solido nei confronti dell'allora allenatore dei viola Carlo Mazzone; il primario Bruno Calandriello, il radiologo Renzo Berzi, i vertici dell'ex Fiorentina (poi fallita), la Federazione Gioco Calcio, l'Asl. Indussero, a vario titolo, Beatrice a sottoporsi alla terapia di raggi X, disattendendo le indicazioni di un illustre ortopedico, Lamberto Perugia. "Io dissi a Beatrice che era troppo pericolosa".

"Questi soldi li daremo in beneficenza" ha detto la vedova Beatrice, Gabriella Bernardini, all'avvocato Odo Lombardo, il dominus del pool di legali che ha redatto la citazione civile. Nel gennaio 2009, grazie anche alla ex Cirielli che aveva accorciato i tempi di prescrizione, l'inchiesta penale era stata ammazzata nella culla. E le accuse a Mazzone e soci - indagati di omicidio preterintenzionale - finirono in archivio, nonostante "i seri indizi" giustificassero almeno un processo. A leggere i verbali dell'inchiesta si è presi dallo sgomento. Beatrice temeva di essere ceduto (e a fine stagione lo fu davvero, al Cesena), avvertiva la sfiducia di Mazzone e quindi fece di tutto per tornare in campo prima il possibile. Il doping dilagava. I giocatori ingerivano compresse di Micoren come caramelle. "Era disponibile per tutta la squadra su un piattino, ricolmo di pasticche rosse. Ci dicevano: "Queste vi aiutano a rompere il fiato"" ricordava il portiere Massimo Mattolini, che nel 2000 subì un trapianto di rene dopo otto anni di dialisi. È morto nel 2009. Giancarlo Galdiolo, altro grande malato di quella Fiorentina, ingeriva due compresse per volta. "Il venerdì sera dopo l'allenamento assumevo una flebo di Esafosfina e d'inverno mi veniva praticata dal massaggiatore un'iniezione intramuscolare di Supracortes, per mantenere la pressione arteriosa a livelli normali". L'antidoping dormiva? Mattolini: "Dopo le partite avevamo tutti una fretta matta di rientrare a casa. Era possibile aggiungere acqua alla provetta, il controllo degli incaricati non era proprio pressante".

Mimmo Caso una mattina scoprì di avere il Linfoma di Hodgkin. Ai magistrati ha detto di "essere stato sottoposto regolarmente a terapie a base di iniezioni di Cromatom, Cortex e Neoton, a volte direttamente in vena. Né io né i miei compagni ci siamo mai preoccupati di verificare quello che ci veniva dato: ci fidavamo ciecamente dei medici". Giancarlo Antognoni, bandiera di Firenze, ha ammesso l'uso di Cortex, Micoren e di "flebo che il medico ci diceva contenere zuccheri o integratori". Nel 2004 ebbe uno strano infarto. "I medici rimasero molto sorpresi del mio caso, lo trovarono anomalo".

Non sarà una causa facile. Da un lato c'è la parola della vedova di Beatrice, di un amico che lo accompagnò regolarmente in ospedale, Aldo Sammicheli, i ricordi nitidi di alcuni compagni di squadra: Moreno Roggi, Walter Speggiorin, Mauro Della Martira. "Beatrice curò la pubalgia con i raggi Roentgen". Dall'altro i medici dell'ex ospedale della Camerata, ben undici, non ricordano nulla. Ma tutti rammentano che all'epoca la clinica non disponeva affatto di un'apparecchiatura di radioterapia. La documentazione medica non è mai stata trovata. Né negli ospedali, né alle Asl, né nelle sedi della Fiorentina. Tutto sparito. Su questo si appunta la difesa di Calandriello ("Mancano le prove documentali") e di Mazzone ("Quando arrivai a Firenze avevo 38 anni, venivo dalla provincia, ero timido ed introverso e non sapevo neanche cosa fosse la Roentgen"). Ma c'è una testimonianza che può fare la differenza: quella di Silvano Flaborea, ex giocatore di Como, Reggiana e Arezzo, il talent scout che ha scoperto The Waterboy. L'unico a presentarsi spontaneamente dai magistrati. Per anni, rivelò, era stato curato con i raggi Roentgen. Grazie a macchinari portatili. (17 novembre 2010)

To be honest, Gio, I had certainly heard of il mastino but my knowlege was very limited. Reading your posts prompted me to look for more info because it is a sad end to a man's life! 39 is no age to check out! I will have to spend some more time reading the part on his widow's lawsuit over the alleged doping, or to be more precise, the use of certain drugs to rush Beatrice back from injury. We know some teams can be guilty of that and I hope in this case that Carletto Mazzone wasn't one of those responsible even if only in deed rather than action, if in fact it happened at all.

Is that lawsuit still ongoing, do you know?

I found this little piece from Wikipedia, from his wife: "He died foaming at the mouth, bruises on the body, sores everywhere. Era diventato l'ombra del calciatore che era stato! Reading this piece, it reminded me that Carlo Antognoni, a "Viola," and Italy's best playmaker of the 1970's-1980's of whom I do have plenty of fond football memories (remember his "offside" goal against Brasil in the 1982 Mondiale?) had suffered a heart attack six years ago.

Della Valle open to Mutu return

President Andrea Della Valle was pleased with the “lovely words from Adrian Mutu” and confirms “he could return to Fiorentina.”
Last night the striker held a Press conference admitting he’d made a big mistake by walking out of a training session and had been “badly advised” by the agents he has now split with.

“I appreciated the lovely words from Mutu after the seriousness of the mess he made,” said Della Valle.

“Adrian asked me to meet with him this evening. I will hear what he has to say, but can confirm his apology was appreciated by the club and the team.

“Have we started the path to his return to the squad? I will decide in the next few days. He might be back in the side, but I cannot say that now.

“What I can state for certain, as I did two weeks ago, is that Mutu is not for sale.”

The row erupted earlier this month when Mutu stormed out of a training session after his agent rang to explain Fiorentina would not allow a transfer to Cesena.

Other sides have since shown an interest in the former Chelsea striker, including Juventus.

A Juan Manuel Vargas free kick allowed Fiorentina to leapfrog Chievo in the standings.

The Viola seemed to secure safety with last week's comfortable win and could even start to target the Europa League. They had an excellent record at the Bentegodi of five wins, a draw and a defeat. Chievo were without a victory in five rounds and had Gelson Fernandes suspended. Fiorentina missed Per Kroldrup, Stevan Jovetic, Sebastien Frey and the banned Marco Donadel.

Mario Alberto Santana was by far the liveliest player in the opening stages. He tested Stefano Sorrentino from distance, then on 22 minutes Alberto Gilardino's flick sent him clear, but the Argentine's daisy-cutter took a touch off Sorrentino to clip the upright of an open goal.

Alessandro Gamberini had to time his sliding tackle perfectly to stop Sergio Pellissier running clear on goal. A couple of Adrian Mutu cross-shots caused problems for Sorrentino, while Juan Manuel Vargas hit a blockbuster from distance that shaved the post.

Fiorentina took the lead straight after the restart. Vargas thumped a free kick that split the defensive wall to surprise Sorrentino at the base of the near post. He got a hand to it, but the shot was just too powerful and bounced in off the upright.

Mutu's glancing header clipped the post from a free kick, but he had been flagged offside anyway. Luciano made his comeback after six months out with a knee ligament injury.

Chievo finally mounted a fightback and went extremely close on the hour mark, as a corner was not cleared effectively and Davide Moscardelli prodded towards goal from six yards, but Artur Boruc stuck out a trailing foot to parry off the line.

Luciano's comeback didn't last long, as he limped off. Uribe came on in his place and threatened an equaliser with his solo effort and finish smothered at the near post.

Alberto Gilardino tested Sorrentino, as did Valon Behrami with a difficult shot as he was slipping, but Uribe again went very close.

There was an amazing opportunity in stoppages. Sorrentino went forward for a corner and his header forced colleague Boruc into a desperate save, then Marco Marchionni went on the counter, but hesitated and allowed the goalkeeper to get back.

Riccardo Montolivo will not sign a contract extension at Fiorentina but revealed there is no agreement with Inter or Juventus who have been linked with the 26-year-old. The midfielder was offered a 2016 extension on top of his current 2012 agreement several months ago, but he delayed his decision.

Fiorentina recently demanded answers from the Italian international, and he has revealed his final decision.

"I have decided not to renew my contract," he told Italian news agency ANSA on Monday. "Fiorentina have always been my priority. I love this shirt, but the doubts that saw me take time to reflect have still not gone away.

"It is not a question of money or the project, it is just that something has changed – the atmosphere and the Della Valle family who for work reasons have moved further and further away."

Moving forward, the midfielder said there is nothing ready with the clubs who have been tracking him. "I want to make it clear that I haven’t agreed anything with any other club," he added.

"I put myself at the total disposal of Fiorentina so we can decide in unison the right decision for the future. "Nevertheless, if the club want to keep me until the end of my contract in 2012 then there will be no problems. I’ll stay with joy."

The Viola finished midtable this term following a less than perfect season.
