Despite strong interest from Italian club Genoa, Bordeaux president Lean-Louis Triaud says the French champions wish to retain the services of Brazilian midfielder Fernando.
Genoa have expressed strong interest in securing the signature of the holding midfielder, whose place in Blanc’s starting line-up has some stiff competition from Czech international Jaroslav Plasil, and have offered a 4.5-year contract to the Brazilian.
Triaud is however reluctant to relinquish Fernando, who has made 18 league appearances this season for one goal as well as providing invaluable extra midfield steel in coach Laurent Blanc’s Champions League 4-2-3-1 formation, and is currently in negotiations with the player’s agent.
"We’ve entered into a negotiation phase," said Triaud. "As long as we’re talking, we’re making progress. Even though I have a lot of respect for Genoa, it’s not like it’s AC Milan who have made him an offer. But also, neither the club nor the coach wishes the player to leave."
Fernando is currently under contract with the French champions until June 2011 and he is seeking an extension of at least two years.
Serie A Week 19 - 10/1/10 (14.00 UK)
Genoa - Catania
Stadio Ferraris
Genoa need a pick me up after conceding five goals for the second time to a Milan based side this season, but Catania are unlikely to oblige.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s team took the lead against Milan on Wednesday only to lose 5-2 and make it three games without a win for the Rossoblu.
Speaking after the game, Gasperini said: “We’re not Champions League contenders. Our main objective is to get as many points as possible and see where we end up.â€
Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has told Radio Radio that a deal has been done with Fiorentina for Dario Dainelli. The 30-year-old joins Genoa in a transfer worth €2.5m and ends their search for a centre-back.
“We can make Dainelli's transfer official,â€
I have to say I'm disappointed with how Genoa's season is developing. I quiet like their style of football and at the start of the season thought they would do very well, even challenge for a CL spot. They're in 11th now, and while its all still very close in the top-half of the table their form and some of their performances have been very poor. The 5-2 defeat to Milan was a tactical nightmare, they allowed them far too much space and looked like a team with no plan B or no alternative in a game that was always going to be very hard. Defeats to the likes of Livorno and Chievo, as well as their Europa League exit, showed they are suffering and failing to find a consistency. Still, Gasperini is a very good coach and they have a lot of quality players, so if they can just settle down a bit and be more consistent they still should be up in there in the Europa League spots come the end of the season.
Genoa needed just 45 minutes to see of the challenge of Atalanta and record only their second victory of 2010, moving them back into the group of clubs chasing a European berth next season.
Rodrigo Palacio put the Rossoblu ahead in the eighth minute before Hernan Crespo sealed the win three minutes before the break.
Atalanta tried hard to find a way back into the game in the second half, but the home side held on for three points which keep them in touch with the top six.
Genoa started at a frenetic pace, looking to rediscover their irresistible early-season form at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and get their European challenge back on track.
And they got off to a flyer with Palacio putting them ahead in the eighth minute.
Alberto Zapater lifted an inviting pass over the top of the Atalanta defence for Palacio to latch onto and, noticing Ferdinando Coppola off his line, he lifted the ball over the Atalanta goalkeeper and into the back of the net from the edge of the area.
Palacio was on fire on his return to the Genoa team after a spell sidelined due to injury and his precise ball sent Giandomenico Mesto through, but Coppola was alert to the danger and raced from his line to clear.
Atalanta were on the back foot but they still managed to test Genoa goalkeeper Marco Amelia in the 28th minute with Tiberio Guarente's shot forcing him into a save at full-stretch.
But Genoa added a second before the break to give themselves a two-goal cushion.
Omar Milanetto's free-kick was flicked on by Palacio to Crespo, who connected with a very determined header to send the ball across Coppola from six yards out and score his fifth goal of the season.
The home side's two-goal lead did not look watertight as Atalanta emerged with a much more positive approach in the second half.
They had recovered from a 2-0 deficit to draw with Bologna in midweek and a repeat looked possible when Jose Talamonti shot over just after the hour mark.
Some confusion in the Genoa penalty area almost favoured Roberto Acquafresca in the 67th minute, but Amelia punched the ball out of the danger zone.
Atalanta substitute Ernesto Chevanton tested Amelia in the 76th minute as the visitors increased the pressure.
They were almost punished three times by David Suazo on the break but, despite the Genoa substitute hitting the post once, a third goal was not in the offing as the hosts got back to winning ways after a recent draw and a defeat.
Atalanta remain second from the bottom of the table with their Serie A future now looking bleak.
Genoa put their crisis to one side by inflicting Bortolo Mutti's first defeat on the Atalanta bench.
The sides were on very different form coming into Marassi, as Genoa had won only one of their last six Serie A games and exited both the Europa League and Coppa Italia. Atalanta were still unbeaten under Coach Mutti and midweek fought back from 2-0 down to hold Bologna in a rescheduled Week 17 tie. The Rossoblu also played on Wednesday, pinning Bari down to a 1-1 draw.
Salvatore Bocchetti was suspended, while Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Raffaele Palladino, Bosko Jankovic and Houssine Kharja were out of action. Edgar Barreto, Madonna and Caserta did not make the trip, but new signing Paolo Zanetti started.
Rodrigo Palacio was not expected to play, but he recovered from injury to start and score the opener. He gathered a long Alberto Zapater ball into the box and lobbed the on-rushing goalkeeper.
The Rossoblu were passing the ball around beautifully, as Hernan Crespo turned Giandomenico Mesto's cross over and goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola sprinted off his line to clear from Mesto.
There was only one team in it and Crespo doubled their advantage before the break. A free kick was touched on for Crespo's towering header at the back post that looped over Coppola.
Ernesto Javier Chevanton came off the bench to flash a shot wide, while his assist was flapped off Robert Acquafresca's head.
David Suazo came off the bench and turned his marker in the box to thump the base of the near post. The Honduran also brought a low save out of the goalkeeper.
Only time will tell if selling Hernan Crespo to Parma was a wise move by Genoa, who host Chievo on Sunday. The departure of the Argentinian striker to Parma earlier this week came as a surprise to many. The 34-year-old had joined Genoa from Inter Milan last summer and was the club's joint leading scorer alongside Giandomenico Mesto with five league goals apiece.
"Our project is to renew the squad," said Genoa president Enrico Preziosi. "We are counting on youth and we have talented young players. Time will tell why we made the choice of selling Crespo to Parma. "Crespo has always behaved correctly and is a great professional."
Crespo's departure was not the only surprise the club pulled this week as the decision to sell defender Giuseppe Biava to Lazio caught many many off guard, including the player himself.
"It's a pity," said Biava. "It has been an unexpected transfer. "I thought I would stay here a long time. It would have been great to have stayed at least until June. "I would have remained even if it meant earning less money. "I leave a club that is healthy, united and determined."
Genoa go into this weekend's match on the back of a goalless draw at Napoli. The outcome marked the fourth time this season that the Grifoni failed to get on the scoresheet and left them 10th in the standings. However, Genoa coach Gianpiero Gasperini put no importance on the outcome and hopes his team can extend their three-match unbeaten run on Sunday.
"We have scored so many goals this season and the game against Napoli was just one of the rare times where we didn't score," said Gasperini. We are the second best striking force (35 goals) in the competition behind Inter and level with Roma and Milan."
The Grifoni also have the second weakest defence in the competition with 36 goals conceded in 22 games. Rivals Chievo extended the gap to the relegation zone to nine points after last weekend's 1-1 draw with Bologna. Having drawn their last two league games, the men from Verona will now be hoping to return to winning ways when they make the journey to the Luigi Ferraris stadium.
"We are giving continuity to our results," said Chievo defender Santiago Morero. "The result against Bologna was important for our battle to avoid the drop. "Now we have to show the same battling performance as we did against Bologna when we visit Genoa."
The Flying Donkeys have not won on the road since December 9 while Genoa have lost just once at home this season. Chievo are still without injured pair Fabio Moro and Elvis Abbruscato. The good news for Chievo coach Domenico Di Carlo is the return of Davide Mandelli, Giampiero Pinzi and Luca Rigoni from suspension. The hosts will be without injured midfielder Houssine Kharja and defender Do
Alessandro The Waterboy netted two, including a controversial penalty, as Juventus fought back to defeat Genoa.
Alberto Zaccheroni had earned two 1-1 draws since replacing Ciro Ferrara, while the club hadn't celebrated a victory since January 6. Felipe Melo was suspended, while Fabio Cannavaro, David Trezeguet, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Christian Poulsen were injured. Mauro Camoranesi and Claudio Marchisio were back in the squad along with Momo Sissoko and Zdenek Grygera, who missed the Livorno game due to a ban.
Genoa's Emiliano Moretti was suspended, joining the sidelined Bosko Jankovic, Rodrigo Palacio, Houssine Kharja, Ivan Juric, Tomovic and Raffaele Palladino. Their record in Turin between Serie A and B was of just two wins, seven draws and 33 defeats.
Omar Milanetto pulled out during the warm-up, so David Suazo came in and transformed the tactics, pushing Giandomenico Mesto into the midfield.
Genoa had the stronger start and should've taken the lead after nine minutes. Marco Rossi's stop and half-volley from the edge of the box cracked against the near post with Gigi Buffon flying across the face of goal.
Juve had Antonio Candreva on the touchline for treatment when they conceded at the Olimpico. Rossi had gone so close before, but this time got his goal. Robert Acquafresca sprung the offside trap on an Alberto Zapater through ball and pulled back from the byline for Rossi's scuffed finish from eight yards.
Giorgio Chiellini's volley was charged down from a corner and Diego's shot smothered, while Momo Sissoko blasted a hopeful effort wide.
Suazo fired wide on the counter for Genoa, as the fans started to stage protests in the stands and threw objects at the opposition supporters.
Alessandro The Waterboy's free kick was too close to Marco Amelia and Diego fired wide, then there were some handbags between Acquafresca and Candreva, as the tension rose in Turin.
Amauri had penalty appeals for a tussle with Sokratis Papastathopoulos, but it seemed to be six of one and a half dozen of another.
Juventus equalised with Amauri's first goal since October 28. The much-maligned Brazilian soared above the crowd to nod in after some fantastic work from Martin Caceres, who rode a tackle and chipped the cross from the right byline.
Gian Piero Gasperini made another change at the break, introducing Ivan Fatic for Acquafresca, so returning to the original tactic he had planned before Milanetto's injury.
Amelia smothered a Caceres volley from distance, but Papastathopoulos nodded a Fatic corner just wide of the far post. Caceres did well to close down Suazo on the counter, but Juve were more aggressive in this second half.
Juventus took the lead with a spectacular goal. Alessandro The Waterboy rushed forward, exchanged passes with Diego's backheel flick on the edge of the box and drilled in an angled drive to finish.
However, it lasted only 120 seconds before Genoa equalised thanks to a Buffon howler. The goalkeeper fumbled a Giandomenico Mesto cross from the right and Rossi was a yard away to tap in the loose ball. He claimed there had been a foul, but Buffon dropped the ball when it ricocheted off his chest.
There was controversy when The Waterboy ran on to a Claudio Marchisio through ball and tripped up just outside the box. The referee judged Papastathopoulos to have clipped his ankle in the area, but replays are inconclusive, as he may have just tripped over his own feet. The Waterboy converted the penalty low at the near post with Amelia getting a finger to it.
There was still a scare late on, as Mesto's ball flashed across the face of goal with nobody able to get the final touch.
Genoa threw away a 2-0 lead, but Ivan Fatic still managed to snatch a shock away victory.
This was effectively a play-off between two teams with an outside chance of Europa League qualification. Only one point separated them going into the Tardini and Parma were fresh from a shock 3-2 win away to Napoli. Genoa had lost the derby and were without a victory in five.
Jonathan Biabiany and Francesco Valiani sat out bans for the home side, while Alberto Paloschi and Damiano Zenoni remained on the treatment table. David Suazo, Ivan Juric, Bosko Jankovic, Houssine Kharja and the suspended Domenico Criscito didn't make the trip, while Marco Amelia was again benched, Emiliano Moretti and Giuseppe Sculli failed fitness tests.
It was a very special game for Hernan Crespo, who was facing his former club, and he had the first shot smothered.
Alessio Scarpi got down well to palm Daniele Gastaldello's header off the line, as Crespo had knocked on a throw-in.
It was Genoa who took the lead against the run of play. Zaccardo was clumsily dispossessed in the final third and Rodrigo Palacio did well to sweep a precise curler into the far post from outside the box.
Davide Lanzafame drilled wide, but Parma needed more of a threat and introduced Valeri Bojinov for the second half in a 4-4-2.
However, Genoa doubled their advantage. Raffaele Palladino went on a slalom and his angled drive was parried into the path of Palacio for his second of the game.
Moments later Parma nearly got back into it from a corner, but the Massimo Paci header turned into an assist for Crespo and Scarpi smothered from point-blank range.
Bojinov nodded over, but the Gialloblu got back into the game on the hour mark. Zaccardo rose at the back post to nod in Lanzafame's cross from the left.
Parma completed their comeback soon after! Lanzafame was down injured, but his teammates kept playing and Scarpi parried the Bojinov angled drive, but the ball ricocheted on to the shin of Salvatore Bocchetti, who clumsily prodded into his own net.
It was wide open at the Tardini, as Mirante performed a desperate reaction save to deny Sculli from point-blank range.
It was Genoa who turned it around again! Ivan Fatic had just stepped on to the field when he gathered down the left flank and seemed to be squaring up for a cross, but smashed the powerful angled drive under the bar from a tight angle!
