Catania draw spells the end for Palermo boss Walter Zenga

Palermo have sacked Walter Zenga after Sunday's 1-1 draw against Catania which extended the Sicilian outfit's winless run to four games.

A statement from the club read: "Palermo announces it has dismissed Walter Zenga as coach of the first team. The club wishes to thank Zenga for the work done and wishes him the best of luck in the future.''

Palermo are 12th in Serie A with 17 points from 13 games. Zenga replaced Davide Ballardini in the summer and was under contract until June 2012.

He had been given a vote of confidence ahead of Sunday's game only for club president Maurizio Zamparini to change in his mind.

Palermo travel to Verona to meet Chievo on Sunday looking for their first win since October 25.

"I honestly didn't expect this,'' said Zenga. "I am extremely disappointed but I don't want to talk in the heat of the moment. I spoke to Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini this morning but I will speak to the press on Wednesday.''

Zenga, who was under contract with Palermo until June 2012, became the seventh coach to be dismissed in Serie A this season.

Former Lazio coach Delio Rossi is the leading candidate to replace Zenga, but the club have yet to make a decision.

"We are thinking about it,'' said Palermo sporting director Walter Sabatini. "I don't know if it will be one between Delio Rossi, Daniele Arrigoni or Mario Beretta. In the next few hours we will make a decision.''

Palermo chief Sabatini: No Man City offer for Kjaer

Palermo sports director Walter Sabatini insists they have not accepted any Premiershit offer for defender Simon Kjaer.

It was claimed that Kjaer had rejected a move to Manchester City after the Rosanero had accepted an offer for the Dane.

But Sabatini insists: "For Kjaer, I read that Palermo would have accepted offers but I can tell you this is lies. We have only received strong interest in the boy from English clubs in particular, but nothing more."

City and Manchester United are chasing Kjaer.

Manchester City have not made an offer for Simon Kjaer, Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini has underlined.

The young Dane has again been linked with the Premiershit club after the latter appointed Roberto Mancini as Coach.

However, speaking to Stadionews, Zamparini has insisted that neither City nor any other outfit have knocked on his door.

Milan Plan Raid For Palermo Star Edinson Cavani - Report

Milan have pulled out plan B from the transfer cabinet as they ponder a move for Palermo striker Edinson Cavani should they fail in their attempt to score with Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko.

Sportmediaset.it reports that the Rossoneri are following Cavani with a steep degree of interest which is likely to grow in relation to other market movers and shakers.

It's no secret the club are tracking Dzeko, but voices in Germany indicate he is unlikely to arrive, fuelling speculation in Italy that Cavani has been touted as the next target for Milan.

However, the San Siro-based side have to stump up around €30 million cash in order to convince fiery Rosanero chief Maurizio Zamparini to part company with the Uruguyan hitman.

I don't know what Cavani has done to earn such a high price-tag and high reputation, its not like he has a prolific goal scoring record or anything. Maybe he has stood out when I haven't seen him but I don't think he's all that he's hyped up to be in the mercato media.

The Danish international is highly regarded in the Italian game and his name has been associated with numerous sides since last summer.

Now Rosanero chief Maurizio Zamparini has confirmed that there are two serious contenders for his signature in England.

Palermo Coach Delio Rossi is looking for his players to react when they face Parma on Saturday.

The Rosanero suffered a 4-2 defeat against Bari last weekend and their fifth place is under threat in Serie A.

Saturday's match has a special flavour as Palermo will face off against former boss Francesco Guidolin.

Matteo Brighi's double, Julio Baptista and John Arne Riise kept Roma in second place, defeating Palermo 4-1.

Francesco Totti feared he might require another knee operation this week, but instead made a remarkable recovery to start this Euro battle. The Giallorossi needed a result to hold off Milan in second place and were coming off a streak of eight consecutive victories in all competition. Palermo surprisingly picked Fabio Simplicio, who is expected to join Roma on a free transfer at the end of the season, ahead of Javier Pastore. Antonio Nocerino was suspended.

The Sicilians had the first chance when Edinson Cavani's dummy let a cross through from the right for Fabrizio Miccoli to blast over relatively undisturbed.

Totti was furious when his shot went over, as the referee did not recognise a deflection off Simplicio for a corner.

Palermo again threatened, as a set play was cleared as far as Giulio Migliaccio for an extraordinary blockbuster from 25 metres that Julio Cesar fingertipped round the base of the post.

Miccoli drilled wide from distance, but Roma wanted a straight red card when Simon Kjaer took out Rodrigo Taddei in a rugby tackle on the touchline, but he only received a yellow as it was some distance from goal.

Mirko Vucinic flashed a shot wide of the near post after Matteo Brighi was closed down in the box. Vucinic went on the counter, but the chance was wasted with hesitation.

It didn't matter, as from the corner Roma took a deserved lead. Brighi's volley with the inside of his right foot took a deflection off Cesare Bovo to put Salvatore Sirigu out of action.

Palermo should've been level on 40 minutes with a splendid Cavani volley on Fabio Liverani's long ball, but Julio Sergio excelled himself by parrying with his legs from point-blank range. The move continued and the Roma goalkeeper was again tested by Cavani at full stretch.

Totti as booked for a reaction foul and will be suspended for the next game against Catania. The captain made way for Julio Baptista at half-time, as he was clearly not 100 per cent fit.

Straight after the restart Cavani's effort was deflected on to the side-netting from close range and Bovo nodded the corner over. Palermo were pushing forward in the second half, but Roma took advantage of a defensive error to double their lead.

Taddei appeared to push Cassani to nod a cross into the six-yard box, but here Bovo didn't clear it properly, so Vucinic's backheel was deflected into the path of Julio Baptista to fire under the bar from close range. It was the Brazilian's first Serie A goal since April.

If there were doubts over Brighi's goal in the first half, there could be none on his second. The midfielder controlled and smashed a rocket from the D that squirmed into the far corner despite Sirigu getting a hand to it.

The Sicilians should've been 3-1 as Javier Pastore acrobatically flicked a lost ball back into play from the byline, but Kjaer nodded over from a couple of yards.

Cavani fell awkwardly on his wrist, making way for Igor Budan. Julio Sergio was saved by the base of the upright when Federico Balzaretti's half-volley came in from eight yards.

Taddei tripped Pastore right on the line and at first the referee had awarded a free kick, but the linesman suggested it was inside the box. Replays are inconclusive, but Miccoli converted the spot-kick to pull one back.

However, Roma soon restored their three-goal cushion with a screamer from John Arne Riise. A long David Pizarro cross-field pass from the right found the former Liverfekkin'wankscum man to smash under the bar from the tightest of angles, practically at the byline.
